Seven County Preps Named To All-Waccamaw Conference Baseball Team seven Brunswick County prep baseball players have been named to the All Waccamaw 2-A Conference diamond team, it was announced last week by league presi dent Colon Lane of Fairmont. Leading the county ballotling was North Brunswick with three seniors selected ? pitcher/first baseman Chris McBridc, pitch er/catcher/inficldcr Chris Walker and pitch cr/outfieldcr David McDowell. The trio led North Brunswick to a sec ond-place finish in the WC behind eventual state 2-A champion Whitcvillc. All three have signed college grants with McBridc and McDowell both going to UNC r Wilmington and Walker headed to UNC Ashcvillc. Walker and McDowell were also among five two-time all -conference selections to this year's team. Joining the Scorpion pair were Shawn Swain of South Brunswick, Gary Rhoda of East Bladen and Richie Blackwell of Whitcville. Both West and South Brunswick named two players each to the elite team. Aldwin Lance (junior center fielder) and Brian Aldcrson (junior pitcher/shortstop) were selected to the team from fourth-place West Brunswick while seniors Swain (pitcher) and Scott Phillips (second base man) were named from Soulh Brunswick. Seven county players also received hon orable mention including Tommy Clark (se nior second baseman), Jarcd McGee (soph omore pitcher/shortstop) and John Lewis (junior catcher) of North Brunswick. Getting the honor from West Brunswick were junior catcher Bryan Fleming and the late George Daniels, a junior pitcher. Daniels died in an auto accident in mid May near the end of the prep season. Receiving honorable mention from South Brunswick were Mike Sellers (senior third baseman) and Jerome Monroe (senior short stop). ***** Whitcvillc led in the All-WC ballotling with four members ? John Sherbert, Chris Smith, Beau Ramcy and Blackwcll. Blackwcll has signed a grant to play for East Carolina University next spring while Sherbert has signed with Clcmson Univers ity. Both were selected in the amateur base ball draft earlier this month but have clcctcd to play collcgiatcly. The group helped lead the Wolfpack to a perfect 26-0 record this past spring enroute to their state title. Lcs Hill, Kyle Bostic and Rhoda were named to the team from third-place East Bladen. Rounding out the team were Bryan Norris of South Robeson, Vice Gray of Fairmont and Ricky Benton of West Columbus. Whitcvillc's Greg Blackmon was named Waccamaw Conference coach of the year after guiding the Wolfpack to the league championship. Other players receiving honorable men tion include Ed Burleson, Carlos Baldwin, Andre Spicer and Mark Harritan of Whitc villc; Robby Priest, Warren Sholar and John Lewis of East Bladen; Chris Hunt of Fairmont, Robert Hunt of South Robeson and Greg Nobles of West Columbus. SPORTING SCFNF Ricky Daniels Listed On East All-Star Team BY JOHNNY CRAIG Recent West Brunswick graduate and basketball star Ricky Daniels will be one of 10 players making up the East team in the 43rd annual McDonald's East- West All-Star Basketball scheduled for Greensboro on July 23. The boys' and girls' all-star games are held in conjunction with the North Carolina Coaches Association summer convention. Joining Daniels, a 6-foot-6, 188-pound forward, will be Andre McCollum, a 6-2 guard from Durham Hillside and John Jacques, a 6-5 guard from nearby Acmc-Dclco. Both Daniels and McCollum have signed grants to play at Anderson (S.C.) Junior College while Jacques has inked with Big East Conference power Georgetown University. Also listed on the cast roster is University of North Carolina signee Donald Williams, a 6-3 guard from Gamer. Others included arc Morris Foreman, a 6-2 guard from from Farmville Central and Brian Frazier, a 6-4 guard from Roanoke Rapids headed for UNC-Grccnsboro. Wes Collins, a 6-6 forward from Kinston who has signed with Furman and Travis "Scooter" Banks, a 6-6 forward from Clinton who will play at Wake Forest next season have also been named to the cast team. Rounding out the squad will be Algernon Moore, a 6-6 center from Northeastern (Elizabeth City) who will be attending Chowan Junior College and Jason Smith, a 6-6 guard/forward from Washington who has signed with Coastal Carolina (S.C.). Lewis Godwin of Greene Central (Snow Hill) has been named head coach of the cast team and will be assisted by Billy Turner of Triton (Erwin). Daniels averaged 29.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game as a senior at West Brunswick and ranks second on the all-star team in scoring. Williams averaged a state-record 35.9 points per game as a senior and finished with 2,574 points in four seasons, ranking third among North Carolina prep scorers all-time. ????? Georgia Tech head football coach Bobby Ross will be the headline speaker at the NCCA clinic scheduled for July 22-25. An estimated 4,000 will participate with most coming from the prep coaching ranks in North Carolina. Among the featured basketball speakers will be Dave Odom of Wake Forest and Eddie Payne, the new head cage coach at East Carolina. W hiteville Wins Rematch Whitevillc Post 137 defeated Brunswick Shores Post 445 for the sec ond time in four days Monday in an 11-2 romp. Whitevillc continues to makeup regularly-scheduled games missed during the Wolfpack's state playoff participation in early June. Richie Blackwell, the winning pitcher in last Friday's game, was again the deciding factor Monday, only this time it was his bat that made the dif ference.
