Art Has Many Faces Step into the Blue Dolphin An Gallery this summer and you will be surrounded by a sea of faces. They'll come at you from ev ery direction on the walls of the up stairs gallery, and in many varieties, too. There are plaster faces, feather faces, some in felt and a group that arc as realistic as you own. What you're seeing is part of the gallery's current exhibit, on display through Labor Day. Called Mugs and Masks, this unique collection of unusual art includes masks in four media, two groups made by county artists. Anne Chadwick, a Shallottc na tive living presently at Shallotte Point, creates her own abstract form of women's faces in plaster, all painted a shiny black and white. About 15 of the Blue Dolphin masks are hers. Southport artist Marylynne Eloisc West designs her masks in felt. Of special interest is her Marilyn Monroe series. The other two contributors to this portion of the show are Beverly Gable from Roanoke, Va., with her life masks, and Martina Moore of Winston-Salem whose creations are pure feathers. That's not all! Over 75 coffee mugs from many artists at the Baltimore Clay Works will meet the mask challenge with unique mugs, some of which will also have a "face" motif. Blue Dolphin is open from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and on weekends by appointment. It is located just at the Oak Island Bridge on Long Beach Road in Southport. Southport's other art gallery, Put A Little Drama In Your Life Sip a little champagne, delight your sweet tooth and laugh a lot on an August weekend, all courtesy of the Brunswick Little Theater. This ten-year-old community the ater group will once again offer its champagne-dessert theater Aug. 9 and 10 in Southport's Centennial Center on Lord Street 'The Curious Savage," a comedy set in a mental institution, focuses on the Savage family who commit their mother because of her unique personality and because they want control of her wealth. Once a resident, Mrs. Savage makes friends with others who live there, each one a delightful and ap pealing individual. As the play con cludes, one has reason to ask whether the wrong people have not been locked up. Certainly the Sav age children prove to be selfish, mean-spirited and shallow. Champagne will be served before the play and at intermission, accord ing to Stuart Callari, secretary of Brunswick Little Theater. "We will also serve a dessert sampler, giving everyone a choice of several treats this year," she said. This event is an annual summer affair for the group, which turns out four performances each year. Tickets for The Curious Savage, including champagne and dessert are $8 or $15 a couple. Curtain time is 8 p.m. Franklin Square Gallery is in pic turesque Franklin Square Park in the heart of downtown Southport. On display through July there will be the juried show of paintings in many media that were hung for the N.C. Fourth of July Festival. Franklin Square Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. One of Chadwick's masks that are on display. STAFF PHOTO BY MAJUORIE MEGIVERN SIMMONS REALTY P.O.
