PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Cash Coroon Heads N.C. Marine Fisheries Panel C. B. "Cash" Caroon of Southport has been named chairman of the N.C. Marine Fis heries Commis sion. Caroon, who operates a sea food processing business, has served on the commission since 1975 and CAROON has been its vicc-prcsidcnl for the past seven years. As chairman he will replace Tom Bennett, who has resigned. The 15-member Marine Fisheries Commission establishes and en forces rules governing coastal fish ing. Learns Auctioneering Windy A. Gcedy of Leland has completed a ba sic course in aucuoncering at the Mcndcnhall School of Auc tioneering in High Point. During the two-week course she completed more than 100 GEEDY hours of training that included actual auctioning expe rience as well as coursework in real estate, livestock, automobiles, an tiques, tobacco, bid-calling and oth er topics. Participated In Exercise U.S. Navy Lt. Eric H. Piucngcr recently participated in a combined Australian and United Slates 50th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Coral Sea, honoring mili tary personnel who lost their lives in the battle. The Battle of Coral Sea, May 4-9, 1942, was the first allied victory in the Pacific theater during World War II. Piucngcr is serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence, forwaid deployed to Yokosuka, Ja pan. A 1982 graduate of St. Mary's College, Sl Mary's City, Md? he joined the Navy in June 1982. Teachers Attend Seminars Two local teachers recently at tended seminars at the North Caro lina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT). Virginia D. Detrie and Patricia A. Fenton, both of Shallottc, were among 19 teachers statewide who participated in a seminar May 17-22 on "What's Modem About the Modem World." Mrs. Detrie, a first grade teacher at Union Primary School, holds a bachelor's degree from Campbell University in Buics Creek. Mrs. Fenton holds both a bache lor's degree and a master's degree from Radford University in Radford, Va. NCCAT, a unit of The University of North Carolina system, conducts a year-round program of renewal seminars for the state's public school teachers. Completes Course U.S. Navy Airman Apprentice Cynthia B. Lewis recently complet ed the Aviation Electrician's Mate course at Naval Air Technical Train ing Center, Naval Air Station Mem phis, Millington, Tcnn. Her husband, Daniel, is the son of Floyd and Jean Lewis of Southport. She received introductory instruc tion needed to perform scheduled maintenance on naval aircraft, in cluding specialized training on elec trical and electronic instrument sys tems. Chiefs Elect Vaughan Police Chief Jim Vaughan of the Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department has been elected to a three-year term as state president of the National Association of Chiefs of Police. It promotes professional stan dards through training classes, workshops, conferences and educa tional aids, conducts an awards pro gram for officer recognition and lob STUDENTS IN THE NFWS Four Selected For HOBY Seminar Jennifer Paige Home and Eric Johnson from West Brunswick High School, Jennifer Hardee from Soulh Brunswick High School and Shan non Gideon from North Brunswick High School were selected to attend the Hugh O' Brian Youth Found ation (HOBY) N.C. Leadership Seminar-East. They are among more than 160 youth leaders representing high schools throughout eastern North Carolina who will meet June 12-14 in Raleigh on the Meredith College campus. The leadership seminars bring to gether a select group of high school sophomores to interact with distin guished leaders in business, govern ment, education and the professions to discuss issues. The project at tempts to teach young people to think for themselves and to broaden their understanding of leadership po tential. HOBY is sponsored by the Raleigh Jaycees and was established by the actor Hugh O'Brian follow ing his visit to Africa where he was inspired by a meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Seminar Graduate The Rev. Kenneth D. Benton of Zebulon, a na tive of Bruns wick County, graduated May 16 from South eastern Baptist Theological Se minary at Wake Forest. Formerly of Winnabow, Ben ton is married to the former Betty Bogie of Win nabow and they have two sons. Benton, who has served as the pastor of churches in Brunswick County, is presently pastor of Watkins Chapel Baptist Church of Route 1 , Zebulon. Two On UNC-C Lists Raymond Englerth of Yaupon Beach and Amy Catherine Thomas of Long Beach arc among the University of North Carolina at Charlotte students who made the spring semester honors lists. Of the 61,000 students who participated in "HP's talent search this year, only 2,243 qualified for this honor.
