PEOPLE IN THE NEWS j Hewett A Semifinalist At N.C. | Science And Mathematics School - Perty Hewett, a former student at West Brunswick High School, is one of 19 students at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics named semifinal ists in the 1993 Na tional Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students. They will compete in the National Merit Scholarship program for about 700 scholarships worth about $3 million to be awarded next spring for college undergraduate study. Semifinalists nationwide were se lected from more than 80,000 black students who requested considera tion by taking the PSAT and Na tional Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in 1991. Finalists will be selected on the basis of academic records, recom mendations, scholastic and extracur ricular accomplishments and goals and confirmation of their qualifying performance on a second test. Rhea Altizer of the Shallotte Police Department has been selected for an Outstanding Crime Preven tion Achievement Award for crime prevention efforts in 1991. tka w f of Crime Control and Public Safety will pre sent the award at the N.C. Crime Prevention Officers' Association meeting Nov. 5 in Raleigh. Committee Announced Ronald E. Hewett, Joe Stevenson and Roscoe Butler have been named co-chairmen of the Clinton/Gore campaign committee in Brunswick County. The three report that more than 75 people attended an Oct 1 organiza tional meeting. While the three have named a steering committee for the cam paign, additional volunteers are still needed, they said. Interested persons can sign up by calling Democratic Party Headquarters at 754-8880. Stationed At Vance Air Force Staff Sgt Mark L. Nelson has arrived for duty at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma. Nelson, a ground radio communi cations technician shift leader, is the son of Carlton L. and Doris K. Nel son of 3357 Countryside Drive, San Mateo, Calif. His wife, Linda, is the daughter of Herbert B. and Marie G. Young of Route 1, Winnabow. Educators Back Hunt Two Brunswick County educa tion officials have joined "Education Leaders for Jim Hunt" in support of Hunt's bid for governor. They are P.R. Hankins of Bolivia, retired superintendent of Brunswick County schools and David E. Kelly of Caswell Beach, a member of the Brunswick Community College Board of Trustees. They are among 500 teachers, principals, teacher assistants, school board members, superintendents, community college board members and members of public and private universities who endorsed Hunt at a Raleigh press conference this week. In UNC- W Honor Society A local student was among 36 in ducted into the Phi Eta Sigma Na tional Honor Society at UNC- Wilm ington on Saturday, Oct. 3. Shelley Denese Lancaster lives at Route 3, Shallotte. Membership in the society is the highest academic honor awarded for performance in the freshman year. Those eligible far membership are students who have completed 30 hours of classes with a grade point average of 3.5 and no grade lower than a C. Homecoming Princess NeCall McKoy of Leland was crowned Home coming Princess during cerem onies at Camp bell University on Oct 3. Hundreds of Campbell alum ni converged on the campus for Homecoming, MCKOY which included competitions among dormitories, clubs and classes. Distinguished alu mni were honored and members of the Campbell Sports Hall of Fame were inducted BUTLER HARDY Two Drivers Chosen Beverly Butler of Shallotte and Jacky Hardy of Thomasboro share September honors as bus drivers of the month at Union Elementary School. The two are employed also as teacher assistants. They were select ed based on past performance and dedication to their jobs, a news re lease indicated. Butler is a graduate of West Brunswick High School and has been a bus driver and teacher assis tant for two years. A graduate of Union High School, Hardy is taking classes at Brunswick Community College. She has been a teacher assistant for sev en years and a bus driver for 11 years. Officials Back Hunt Five Bninswick County officials have joined "Local Government Officials for Jim Hunt" in support of the Democratic gubernatorial] candi date. They are Mayor Wally Ausley of Holden Beach, Mayor Kenneth D. Messer Sr. of Belville, Mayor May Moore of Yaupon Beach, County Commissioner Gene Pinkerton of Southport and former Commissioner W.A. Stanley Jr. of Shallotte. They are among 464 current and former county commissioners, may ors, town councilmen and women and other local government officials across the state who have endorsed Hunt for governor. Receives Scholarship Appalachian State University se nior Mary C. McCurnby is the 1992 93 recipient of the Jackson, Sumner and Associates Insurance Scholar ship. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry McCumby of Shallotte. The $500 scholarship is given to a student who demonstrates potential for becoming a successful insurance professional; has achieved academic excellence; is actively involved in Gamma Iota Sigma, the national in surance fraternity; and is recom mended by two independent insur ance agents.
