After trailing early, the Cougars held a 13-12 lead after one quarter and broke the game open with 27 points in the sccond period. The game was tied 16-16 when South went on a 12-0 run to pull away. The Cougars, who pressed North's guards and created havoc in the Scorpion backcourt the entire game, added a 12-4 run to close out the first half and took a 40-22 lead into the locker ioom. North Brunswick tried to make several charges in the third quarter, but South's White answered every one. The senior guard nailed a pair of three-pointers early in the period and scored the remainder of his 19 third-quarter points on a variety of layups and short jump shots. South Brunswick used a 13-2 run over the last 3 1/2 minutes of the quarter to lead 65-36 going into the final period. The Cougars didn't stop scoring with White resting on the bench. Guard Antoine Johnson scored sev en of his 11 points in the fourth quarter, and Oscar Roberts scored all of his six points in the period. SPORTING SCENE Josh White's His Name; Quickness Is His Game Just how quick is Josh White, the spectacular senior point guard for uic South Brunswick boys' basketball team? Josh is extremely quick, everyone agrees, but it's hard to say just how quick. There's really no widely-accepted means of measuring quickness in an athlete. If we wanted to know bow fast Josh is, we'd line him up and make him run the 40-yard dash. If we wanted to know how strong Josh is, we'd see how much weight he could lift. But quickncss is one of those in teresting qualities that can't be mea sured. If there was a quickncss test, there's no doubt that Josh While would pass with flying colors. Josh and quickncss go together like cereal and milk, bacon and eggs, cheese and crackers, pepperoni and Doug Rutter Sports Editor pizza, pork chops and apple sauce. You get the picture? Josh isn't a big kid. He stands just 5 feet, 11 inches. He might weigh 150 pounds wringing wet. But Josh can lake over ball games with steals, layups and precision passes to teammates. He's so quick he can pick an opponent's pocket at midcourt, convert the steal into a layup, swipe the inbounds pass, pop a three-pointer and sell a box of buttered popcorn in about the time it takes most people to sneeze. If you need evidence of his game-breaking ability, consider Josh's per formance in the third quarter of last week's North Brunswick-South Brunswick basketball game in Boiling Spring Lakes. Josh scored 19 of his team's 25 points in the period in a variety of ways. White outscorcd the entire Scorpion lineup by five points in the third quar ter. Josh tends to score in bunches. He sank two three-pointers and ran off 12 straight points in the third quarter last Tuesday before any other Cougars goi into the scoring column. Then, with 28 total points to his credit and the game well in hand, Josh sat out the fourth quarter. He's so quick he plays 32 minutes of basketball in 24 minutes. Now that's quick. Lody Cougars Growling While we're on the subject of South Brunswick basketball. Coach Mike Isenberg's girls team is on track to improve on last season's impressive 20-6 record. South was 12-0 goinj into this week's play. The Lady Cougars aren't just winning, they're winning big just about every night out. South is beating its opponents by an average of 30 points per game. They're talented, deep and well-coached. And the Lady Cougars haven't played a "cupcake" schedule. South defeated a pair of Wilmington 4-A schools. New Hanover twice and Laney once, in non-conference com petition. Not to jinx the Lady Cougars, but this team has the potential to finish the regular season 26-0, winning both the Waccamaw Conference regular season and tournament titles along the way. From there, there's no telling how far South Brunswick can advance in the state playoffs. It wouldn't surprise me to sec the Lady Cougars bring home a slate championship banner. * Timothy P.
