The West Brunswick girls' bas
ketball team improved to 3-1 in the
Waccamaw 2-A Conference last
Friday night with an easy 55-25 vic

Kaneka Gnssctt combined for 28
points, anil center Nicole Norris
scored all 15 of her points in the first
half as the Lady Trojans rolled to
their third win in the last four
games.
"I'm glad to get a win any way
we can get it," West Brunswick
Coach Brenda Council said. "I
didn't think we played very good
defense. We were doing a lot of
standing around."
Despite the lack of defense. West
jumped nut to a 10-0 lead in the first
three minutes of the game. North
committed five turnovers before
scoring us first point with 4:15 left
in the opening quarter.

Council said West Brunswick's
guard play Friday night was the best
it has been all season, particularly
on offense. Gause and Grisscu were
repeatedly left open for shots and hit
a good percentage.
"I was telling them if they leave
you open go right on in there and
shoot," Council said. Grissclt hit
three three-pointers and scored 15
poinLs, while Gausc scored most of
her 13 points driving to the basket.
Council said West will have to
work on its defense going into this
week's league games. "We're going
to have to play better defense and
rebound better. We need to crash the
boards. We didn't do a very good
job of that."
West's girls were scheduled to
play Fast Bladen at home Tuesday.
The Lady Trojans travel to Boiling
Spring Lakes Friday lor a game with
undefeated South Brunswick, which
is ranked second in the state 2-A

WEST VISITS FRIDAY
South Brunswick Girls Win 7 4th Straight
BY I>(>uc; RUTTKR
South Brunswick's Lady Cougar basketball
team clawcd its way to a pair of Waccamaw 2-A
Confcrcncc victories last week as the unbeaten
club recorded its school-record 14th straight win.
The South girls defeated host Fairmont 37-22
Friday night and toppled visiting South Robeson
53^40 last Tuesday to improve to 5-0 in the
league and 14-0 overall.
Coach Mike Isenbcrg said Monday this will
be his team's toughest week so far this season.
The Lady Cougars were scheduled to play at
Whiieville Tuesday before returning home Friday
to host West Brunswick.
"My biggest concern is that they learn to play
hard every time out," the coach said. "They've
played hard when they've felt they needed to play
hard. We've been up and down. We've been
playing to the level of our opponents."
South Brunswick, the defending conference
basketball tournament champion, presses and
traps on defense, and utilizes its inside and out
side scoring punch on offense.
"When the game is tight and it's sort of
crunch time they rise to the occasion," Iscnberg
said. "Most of them have played together three
years and they're real confident in each other's
abilities."
The 14 conseculivc girls' basketball victories
"The longer your
winning streak goes the
more pressure you feel."
?Coach Mike Isenberg
is a South Brunswick High School record. The
1991-92 Lady Cougars had a 12-gamc winning
streak during their 20-6 campaign.
"The longer your winning streak goes the
mare pressure you feel," Isenberg said.
South Brunswick has played most of January
without two of its top starters, point guard Stacy
Isenberg and center Erika Bryant. Both arc nurs
ing knee injuries.
Bryant returned to the bench last week, but
Isenberg said her knee is only 60 percent to 70
percent healed. Stacy Isenberg, step-daughter of
the coach, will likely be out another two weeks.
"We're not as deep as we were," Coach
Isenberg said. With those two starters out,
Tamcka Davis has stepped in to play point guard,
and Jenny Fullwood has picked up the slack in
the center.
"Jenny Fullwood's probably having the best
year of anybody. She's been real consistent,"
Iscnbcrg said.
Fullw(*)d is ihc team's leading rebounder and
the only Lady Cougar averaging double figures in
scoring, but the coach said players aren't con
cerned about individual statistics.
"They don't care about who leads the scor
ing," Iscnbcrg said. "They're very unselfish. They
get along real well. You can really see that in
practice."
Tasha Sellers scored 10 points in the Lady
Cougars' win at Fairmont. Fullwood scored 21
points to pace the Lady Cougars to their 13-point
win over South Robeson.
The Lady Cougars maintained their hold on
second place last week in the Associated Press 2
A high school girls' basketball poll.
"The girls don't really pay much attention to
it," Iscnbcrg said of the ranking. "They're proud
of it, but I think they realize the only thing that
matters is getting through the conference and into
the playoffs."
Franklinton, the last team to beat South
Brunswick, is ranked first in the suite at 12-0. The
Lady Rams defeated South 38-33 last March in
the sectional finals of the slate playoffs.
"They realize they are capable of beating any
2-A team," Iscnbcrg said of his Lady Cougars.
"But they also realize they arc capablc of losing
to a good 2-A leant.

Doane said. "They jump belter than
we do. They controlled the boards."
Fairmont, the conference's de
fending regular-season and tourna
ment champion, improved to 11-0
overall. The Tornadoes were ranked
second in the state last week in the
Associated Press 2-A high school
basketball poll.
Coach Doane said he thinks the
Cougars (9-5 overall) have a chance
to beat the Golden Tornadoes when
they visit Boiling Spring Lakes Feb.
19.
"They don't look invincible like
they did last year," said Doane, re
ferring to the 1991-92 Fairmont club
that went 27-1.
