Seven Area Women To Compete
For Miss Brunswick County Crown
"Success!" will be the evening's
theme as seven talented young col
lege and professional women com
pete in the 1993 Miss Brunswick
County Scholarship Pageant to be
staged this Saturday, Feb. 6, at 8
p.m. in Hatch Auditorium on the
campus of the N.C. Baptist Assem
bly in Caswell Beach.
The theme was chosen "to reflect
the Miss America Pageant philoso
phy of education, personal develop
ment and career orientation," ac
cording to pageant director David
The Miss Brunswick County
Pageant is Southeastern North Caro
lina's official Miss America prelimi
nary pageant, with entrants from
Brunswick, Columbus and Pender
counties. The winner will represent
Brunswick County in the 1993 Miss
North Carolina Pageant in June.
This years contestants and their
chosen talent performances include:
?Jennifer Lynn Howard of Bruns
wick County, a 19-year-old sopho
more at Brunswick Community Col
lege majoring in communications.
She wiii present a dramatic mono
?Lamicce Lancer McKoy, 21, of
Brunswick County, a junior at the
University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill who will perform a pop
ular vocal selection.
?Sonya Michelle Nance, 23, of
Brunswick County, a senior at
UNC-Chapcl Hill majoring in phar
macy. She will present a tap dance.
?Eva Elizabeth Rivcnbark, a 22
year-old Pender County resident and
a graduate of Campbell University
with a Bachelor of Science degree in
home economics. She will perform a
character jazz dance.
?Janelle Lynn Walters, 23, of
Columbus County, who is a gradu
ate of Southeastern Community Col
lege and East Carolina University,
where she earned a Bachelor's
Degree in communications. She will
present a tap dance.
?Lycia Joncll Ward, 21, of Bruns
wick County, a senior English major
at Meredith College who will per
form a flute solo.
?Lisa Dale Young of Brunswick
County, a 23-year-old senior major
ing in studio art at UNC-Wilm
ington. She will present a flute solo.
The Miss Brunswick County
Scholarship Pageant is an official
Miss America preliminary pageant
sponsored by Scholarship Pageants
of Brunswick County, Inc., a non
profit civic organization. Contes
tants not only get a chance to com
pete in the Miss North Carolina
pageant, but they may also win a
share of more than S4,000 in schol
arships and a ?ds.
Mistress of Ceremonies for the
Miss Brunswick County Scholarship
Pageant will be Nancy Humphries,
Miss South Carolina 1987, who is a
successful television anchor and re
porter from Charleston, S.C.
Highlighting this year's pageant en
tertainment will be guest perfor
mances by two former Miss
Sheri Huffman of Atlanta Geor
gia, who was Miss Virginia 1991
and a talent award winner at the
1991 Miss America Pageant, will
sing three songs at this years event.
Also performing will be Heidi
Williams, Miss North Carolina
1992, a classical soprano who has
been a featured soloist in perfor
mances by the North Carolina
Symphony and the Raleigh Sym
The Brunswick County Band, un
der the direction of Paul Pittengcr,
will perform throughout the pageant
along with the Miss Brunswick
County Dancers, a troupe of area
dance students, under the direction
of Jennifer Gilligan. a 1988 Miss
Brunswick County award recipient.

County Board of Commissioners al
so will participate in special recog
nition portions of the program.
The reigning Miss Brunswick
County is Crystal Maria Williams of
Lcland, a sophomore at the Uni
versity of North Carolina at Wilm
ington majoring in elementary edu
Miss Brunswick County makes
approximately 60 personal appear
ances annually across the southeast
as a representative of the county.
