South Cougars Edge Trojans At County Wrestling Tourney BY DOUG RUTTKR South Brunswick's Cougars won six of 13 weight classes and cap tured the third annual Brunswick County Wrestling Tournament Saturday at North Brunswick High School. After falling behind in the tourna ment's first round. South won three of the last four weight classes in the championship round to edge West Brunswick by three points in the fi nal team standings. South, the regular season champi on, collected 32.5 points in the two rounds. West Brunswick was second with 29.5 points and host Nonh Brunswick finished third with 19. "It takes a whole team to win something like this," South Bruns wick Coach Don Millwood said. "We lost some early matches, but the heavier weights came through for us." South Brunswick's individual county champs were Derrick Cordle at 103 pounds, Justin Rohde at 135, Ty Haughn at 140, Phillip Craven at 160, Craig Frazier at 171 and Terry Galloway at heavyweight. County champions from West Brunswick were Dexter Cokclcy at 112 pounds, Chris Jackson at 119, Barry Johnson at 125 and Eric Andrcis at 152. North Brunswick's winners were Mike Ganey at 130 pounds, Casey McBride at 145 and Dwaun Gibbs at ion io./. Gibbs, the defending county champ at 171 pounds and top seed this year at 189, outscored South's *??. Galloway led 4-2 after the first, two-minute period and 13-7 after the second before Gibbs took control. Trailing 14-13, Gibbs picked up three back points in the tinal 15 sec onds to pull out the victory. Fans saw another good match at 145 pounds, where North's McBridc upset top-seed cd Chris Shcpard of South Brunswick. Shcpard led 3-2 after two periods, but Mc Bride was awarded two points in the final peri od for illegal moves by the South grappler and held on for the win. With his win at 152 pounds. West's Andrcis became the county's first wresder to win three straight individual championships. Youth Wrestlers Win Medals Brunswick County youngsters captured about one third of the medals at the Sun Valley Youth Wresding Invitational Sunday in Charlotte. Local grapplers brought home 28 medals, including eight gold, 11 sil ver and nine bronze, according to West Brunswick Wresding Coach Joe Noble. Winning gold medals were Paul Powell, Kyle Knott, Ian Knott, Justin Sellers, Tal Arrowood, Jona thon Hickman, Billy Noble and Michael Jackson. Silver-medal winners were Tom my Dailey, Josh Taylor, Marcus Pcllen, Jones Orrock, Josh Honey cutt, Bobby Earwood, Matt Koch, Michael Johnson, Anthony Dumas, Albert Dumas and Walter Burck halter. Jonathon Davis, Daniel Kempton, Chris Orrock, Tommy Roberson, James Baston, David Roberson, Cameron Cowan, Ricky Koch and Eddie McKennon won bronze medals. Cougars Face Aces In Slate Playoffs South Brunswick's wrestling team was scheduled to open the state 1-A/2-A dual team playoffs Tuesday against Northeastern 2-A Confer ence champion Edcnton Holmes. Cougar Coach Don Millwood said the first-round match was to be held at centrally-located Dixon High School. Millwood said he didn't know much about the Edcnton Accs. "We're excitcd about the opportu nity to face them. At this point they're all going to be good," Mill wood said Tuesday morning. "We're just hoping we can match up with them and wrestle well." The winner of the South Bruns wick Eder.tcr. Holmes match was expected to wrestle the winner of the Dixon-Pamlico match Tuesday night. Dixon is the defending state champion. WEST BEATS BEACH Defending Champ Dixon Pins Trojans, Couqars Dixon High School's wrestling learn showed last week why it is the defending 1-A/2-A dual team state champion. In a season when West Brunswick and South Brunsr wick have battled fiercely for county supremacy, Dix on's Bulldogs defeated both in a span of three days. The Bulldogs dropped visiting West Brunswick 33 24 last Thursday, just two days after edging host South Brunswick 33-27. In other dual team action last week. West Brunswick posted a 72-0 victory over host Myrtle Beach Tuesday. The Trojans won six weight classes by forfeit. West Brunswick was scheduled to conclude its regu lar season Wednesday night with a home match against South Carolina power Socastce. North Brunswick's Scorpions will wrap up their reg ular season Saturday when they travel to Myrtle Beach High School for a tri-meet.
