SBHS Student Stabbed
In Fight After Ball Game
A 15-year-old South Brunswick
High School student was stabbed
five times in the hack during a light
between two women at a South port
fast food restaurant Friday night, ac
cording to a crime report on Tile at
the Brunswick County Sheriff's
Department Monday.
The brother of one of the two
combatants. Scotty Jerome Steven
son. 21. of Route 2, Bolivia, has
been arrested and charged with as
sault with a deadly weapon with in
tent to kill, inflicting serious injury,
Del. Gene Caison said Monday.
I~hc injured student, whose name
is being withheld because of her
age, was Heated and released from
Dosher Memorial Hospital after the
incident.
The victim told police that she
and another woman got into a fight
at the McDonald's restaurant on
Long Beach Road. During the alter
cation, another person attacked her
from behind and stabbed her repeat
edly with a small knife.
According to Deputy Roger Har
rington's report, "she doesn't know
exactly when she got stabbed, but
the witnesses advised that the actual
stabbing took place in McDonald's,"
the report states.
The fight was one of several that
broke out at the restaurant as about
250 young people gathered there af
ter a high school baskcthall game,
Caison said. The dispute between the
two women was the continuation of
another altercation that occurred Jan.
16 at South Brunswick High School.
Caison said McDonalds manage
ment had been warned to expect
trouble after the game.
Stevenson reportedly turned him
self in to police Saturday morning.
He was released on payment of a
S5.000 secured bond, Caison said.

?Someone broke into a home on
Midway Road, Bolivia, Friday and
stole an estimated S5.475 worth of
property. Deputy Sgt. Charles Wil
son rejxirted. "Hie owner said that
the thief or thieves entered his home
through the garage while he was
gone for the day. Among the items
missing was a .38-calibcr pistol,
four gold rings, a telephone answer
ing machine and about S200 worth
of silver coins. Wilson found the ga
rage door had been pried open, caus
ing an estimated S75 damage.
?An estimated $7,780 worth of au
dio equipment and other property
was reported stolen in a break-in and
larceny at the Club New World on
Sawmill Road, Leland, Thursday
night. The owner told Deputy Ric
hard DuVall that someone entered
the building sometime after 9:30
p.m. by unknown means. Among
the items missing were four ampli
fiers, two turntables, a sound mixer,
a color television, two metal detec
tors four flashlights and two sets of
walkie-talkies.
?A mobile home in the Hurricane
Haven area of Holden Beach was
broken into sometime in the past
four months, according to Deputy
Timothy McGinn's report. The own
er, who lives in Southern Pines, dis
covered the break-in Sunday after
noon. McGinn found that the front
door had been forced open around

was a color television and a video
cassette recorder valued at a total of
$750.
?A Leland woman lied her Heights
Drive home Saturday night after
hearing a burglar kick down her
back door. The woman told Deputy
Brian Saunders that she was at home
alone at about 9:30 p.m. when she
heard a voice and dogs barking out
side. She picked up the phone to dial
911, but found the line dead. After
turning off the lights and the televi
sion, she looked outside to see a
man running toward her back dmr.
When she heard him crash through
the back door she ran to a neigh
bor's home to call police. Sanders
estimated the damage at S400.
?A Burlington man told Deputy
Cathy Hamilton that he returned to
his mobile home in Forest Hills
Thursday after Deputy Patli Hewctl
informed him that she had found his
back door open. The only item
found missing was a blue, 10-gallon
cowboy hat valued at about SI00.
There was an estimated SI50 dam
age to the door.
?Someone apparently shot out a
night light and two signs at the Har
dee's restaurant on N.C. 211 near
Southport Saturday night. Deputy
Sgt. Daryl Marlow estimated the
damage at about $700.
?A stainless steel .38-caliber pistol
was reported stolen from a car
parked at Carbo's Lounge in Cala
bash Friday night The owner told
Deputy Sankcy Fields that he went
into the club at about 7 p.m. and
came out shortly after midnight to
find the gun missing. Its value was
estimated at $269.
?Someone stole a push lawn mower
oul of a storage building behind a
mobile home in the East Tangle
wood section of Holdcn Beach
sometime in the past month. The
owner told Hamilton that he went
outside to get the machine last
Saturday and found that the lock had
been pried off the door. The deputy
estimated its value at S2(X) and the
uamage to the door at SI5.
?A videocAssetie recorder was re
ported stolen during a break-in at a
mobile home on Makatoka Road,
Supply, Sunday. The owner told
McGinn that she came home from
church to find her back door open
and the VCR missing from atop her
bedroom television. Its value was
estimated to be about S2(X).
?There was an estimated S2(X) dam
age, but nothing reported missing, in
an apparent break-in at a store at the
intersection of Exum Road and Big
Neck Road Friday night. Fields re
ported finding the front door glass
broken and estimated the damage at
S2(X).
?Someone apparently used a sharp
object to scrape the side of a Chev
rolet Suburban parked at a home on
Lancaster Drive, Supply, Saturday
night. The owner told McGinn that
he heard his dogs barking in the
back yard at about 11:30, but saw
nothing unusual outside. The next
morning he was working in his yard
and noticed several scratches about
three feet long in the right rear fend
er of his vehicle. No damage esti
mate was given.
?A Pepsi-Cola machine was found
on a din road leading to an old meat
packing plant off Cedar Hill Road,
Leland Sunday. Deputy Matthew
Jcsscn reported that the machine
was extensively damaged and all the
contents had been removed. Its val
ue was estimated at S2,(XX).
DOT Flagman's Foot Broken
When Hit By Motor Grader
A highway flagman was trans
ported to The Brunswick Hospital
Tuesday morning with a broken fool
after a motor grader backed into him
on a work site at Sunset Beach.

Highway Patrol said William A.
Divine, 45, was trying to Hag a car
when the accident happened Divine
was pari of an N.C. Department of
Transportation crew widening the
shoulders of the road at the intersec
tion at N.C. 179 and N.C. 9(>4 at
Seaside.
Divine was struck by a motor
grader rolling backwards as the op
erator tried to back up into a drive
way, said Caulder. "He wasn't pay
ing attention and he didn't realize
the grader was getting that close.
"It broke his fool, hut he wasn't
hurt that bad."
Divine was transported by

CAR REAR-ENDS SCHOOL BUS
Eight Students Transported To
Hospital After Leland Collision
Nine people, including eight Lincoln Primary School
students, were transported to New Hanover Regional
Medical Center in Wilmington last Thursday morning
alter a car rear-ended a school bus on U.S. 74.
According to the N.C. Highway Patrol office in Wil
mington, the wreck occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m.
Jan. 28 about 5.1 miles west of Lcland on U.S. 74.
The report filed by Trooper D.A. Lewis said that
Leslie McKoy, 27, of Lcland, was driving west on U.S.
74. Her 1980 Chevrolet bus was carry ing 40 passengers
to Lincoln Primary School. She had stopped to take on
passengers and the bus was moving forward and picking
up speed when it was struck in the rear by a 1991 Dodge
truck operated by Michelle Brooks, 37, of Wilmington.
Brooks was transported with serious, incapacitating
injuries. Also taken to the hospital were eight student
bus riders with complaints of injury'.
Damages to the bus were estimated at S700 and to
Brooks' truck, S2.500.
Brooks was charged with failure to reduce speed.
Lincoln Principal Joe Buder said Tuesday that all
eight students were treated and released.
No injuries were reported following a two-car acci
dent that occurred Thursday, Jan. 28, at 2:50 p.m. about
1 mile south of Shallotte at the intersection of the
Shallottc bypass of U.S. 17 and Old Shallotte Road
(S.R. 1316).
Susan Johnson, 43, of Ocean Isle Beach, was travel
ing cast on Old Shallotte Road in a 1987 Ford when she
attempted to cross U.S. 17. However, Trooper J. V. Dove
reported, she failed to yield the right of way to a north
bound 1993 Dodge van operated by Peggy Gibson, 42,
of Shallotte, and struck the van.
Johnson was charged with a yield violation.
Damages were estimated at S1,9(X) to the van and S9(X)
to the car.
Approximately 10 minutes later, another two-car ac
cidcnt occurred at the intersection of N.C. 211 and
Sunset Harbor Road (S.R. 1112) 9.1 miles southwest of
Bolivia. No injuries were reported.
Both Harry Cohcnno, 54, of Shallouc, driving a
1980 Chevrolet van, and Frances Lancaster, 71, of
Bolivia, driving a 1983 Buick, were traveling west on
N.C. 211.
When Lancaster attempted to turn left onto Sunset
Harbor Road, reported investigating Trooper T.W.
Calder, her car was struck by Cohenno's van as he tried
to pass her car and a second vehicle not involved in the
accident.
Both vehicles came to rest on Sunset Harbor Road.
Damages were estimated at S8(X) to the van and S1,5(X)
to the car.
Cohcnno was charged with improper passing.
A driver and all four of his passengers were injured
in a singlc-car crash that occurred Friday, Jan. 29, at
8:55 p.m. 2.9 miles south of Leland on Lanvale Road
(S.R. 1438).
Rodney Robinson, 19, of I .eland, was driving south
on Lanvale Road when his 1992 Nissan ran off the
pavement on the right side of the road, crossed the road
and ran off the left side, then struck a tree.
According to the report filed by Trooper B.C. Jones,
a passenger in the right front turned the steering wheel
to the right, causing the driver to lose control of the car.
Robinson was charged with having no operator's li
cense and no insurance.
He and four passengers, all of Leland, were taken to
New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Passengers Robert Kennedy and Dcmonc McCoy, both
21, were listed as having serious, incapacitating injuries.
Robinson and two other passengers, Dwaync Hill, 16,
and Tory Bryant, 17, were listed as having serious, non
incapacitating injuries.
Damage to the Nissan was an estimated S6,(XK).
