"I planted them on time and put on plenty of fertilizer, plenty of 8-8-8," he said. Marlow, 78, gardens year round and serves on the Wac camaw School Advisory Coun cil. The largest of his three su per-size turnips weighs 9 pounds, with a 21-inch circum ference. The other two weigh 6 pounds each, and measure 17 inches and 19 inches around respecti vely. Volunteers Sought A search is under way by Brunswick Community College for volunteers to serve as adviso ry council members for the Odell Williamson Auditorium. Approximately 12 to 15 per sons will be chosen, selected ac cording to their interest, ability to serve and their background as it relates to cultural event plan ning. The council will advise the auditorium manager in the areas of programming, fund raising and marketing. BCC is seeking representa tives from the various arts and community organizations within the county. "These advisory council mem bers will share information with their clubs and become a part of a communications network pub licizing upcoming community events at the Brunswick Co mmunity College facility," said Mike Sapp, auditorium manager. "The information they take from this council back to their respec tive organizations will provide a vital link to our community. "The council will represent all geographic areas and interests of the citizens of Brunswick County." Rose To Attend Demo Pigpicking Seventh District Congressman Charlie Rose will be in Brunswick County Friday, Feb. 19, for a 6 p.m. fundraising dinner at the Democratic Party headquarters, according to W.A. "Bill" Stanley, party chair man. Proceeds of the pigpicking will be used to pay off the mortgage on the building. The event is cosponsored by Rose and the Democratic Party. Tickets arc S5 each and the menu includes pork, slaw, baked beans, drinks and a dessert prepared by the Democratic Ladies. Tickets arc av ailable from party members or at the door. Also, said Stanley, "If you have a question for the congressman or would like to come talk with him, this is the time." PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Area Boy Attains The Rank Of Eaqle Scout uanny James Smith, 16, has at tained the rank of Eagle Scout. Smith is the son of Danny and Rebecca Smith of Eliz abcthtown. He is the grandson of Dorscy and Doris Smith of Ash and Aus bum Cox of Longwood. A member of SMITH Troop 650, Smith was sponsored by Wesley's Chapel United Methodist Church of Elizabethtown. He has been involved in Scouting for eight years. His activities have included Order of the Arrow and five camping trips in the western North Carolina moun tains. He was guest of Col. Curtis Brown, pilot of Space Shuttle Endeavour, at a shuttle lift-off. Smith's awards and honors in clude the National Honor Society; special academic awards in mathe matics, spelling and reading; and four years of perfect school atten dance. UNC-G Dean's List Three Brunswick County students have been named to the dean's list during first semester at the Univer sity of North Carolina at Greens boro. They are Rodney R. Davis of New Trends Int The latest trends in hair, nails and makeup styles were introduced and officers clectcd at a meeting Feb. 1 of Cape Fear Affiliate No. 26 of the National Cosmetology Association of North Carolina. The Cosmetology Department of Brunswick Community College hosted the meeting. New officers are Frances Brady, president, and Kay Boone, vice presi dent, both of whom are BCC cosme tology instructors; Nancy Gregory, secretary; and Marie Pail, treasurer. The group will meet the first Monday of each month to conduct meetings and classes to update its members on all aspects of the pro fession. Elks Auxiliary Meets A program on birds and a report from the nominating committee are scheduled when the Ladies Auxi liary of Elks Lodge 2679 in Cala bash meet Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. at the lodge. Guest speakers David and Mar jorie Harper of Shallotte will give a slide presentation on "Birds of the Southeast." The two have an exten sive collection of slides that reflect their interests in birds, wildflowcrs and the outdoors in general. Ornithologist To Speak Chris Marsh, an ornithologist on the faculty of Coastal Carolina Col lege at Conway, S.C., will give a slide presentation on the "Birds of Texas" at the next meeting of the Brunswick Bird Club. The club meets Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the meeting room of Atlantic Telephone Membership Corp. on N.C. 130 West in Shallotte. During the BOZKMAN six w^ks of training, the airman studied Air Forcc mission, organization and cus toms and received special training in human relations. Col. Roy E. Gray has been promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. The fiscal year 1993 Colonel Sel ection Board chose 96 colonels from 726 eligible lieutenant colonels. Gray is the son of the iate Homer L. Gray of Shallotte. Currently assigned at the Defense Personnel Support Center in Phila delphia, Gray is midway through a three-year joint duty assignment. His 21 years of service have pro vided opportunities to serve throughout the world. Gray graduated from Shallotte High in 1967 and from Pembroke State University in 1972. He now resides in Newark, Del., with his wife Peggy and two sons, Trevor and Wesley. Trevor will be attending the University of North Carolina in September. Whitehead Graduates Sr. Master Sgt. Mclvin A. Whitehead Sr. has graduated from the nine-week U.S. Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) Academy at Gunter Air Forcc Sta tion, Montgomery, Ala. A fuels superintendent. White head is the brother of Eva Holmes of South port. At the Academy he studied ad vanced management techniques, communication skills and behavioral science. Reports At Ft.
