ENTERTAINMENT BRIEFS African Art And Artifacts On Display In obscrvancc of Black History Month, an exhibit of African art and artifacts will be displayed Friday, Feb. 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the public assembly building at the Brunswick County government complex in Bolivia. The exhibit will feature a display of African apparel and the winning artwork from a recent competition held in local elementary, middle and high schools. A food sampling table will offer typical items of African cuisine. The event is free and open to the public. After-School Arts Come make something green for Si. Patrick's Day. An after-school arts program has been scheduled for Wednesday, March 10, at the Southport Library; Thursday, March 11, at the Lcland Library; and Tuesday, March 16, at the Shallotte Library. All programs will be from 4-5 p.m. and are open to all 6-13-year olds. Materials will be provided, and pre-registration is not required. For more information, call Emma T. Commodities Distribution Slated March 19-20 Here USDA commodities will be dis tribulcd March 19 and 20 by the Brunswick County Volunteer & Information Center at die Repub lican Headquarters building in Sup ply. Friday hours will be 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday hours 8:30 a.m. until supplies arc exhausted, said Angela Fisher, executive assistant. Commodities to be distributed in clude butter, flour, commeal, peanut butter, green beans, canned meat, or ange juice, raisins and rice. The commodities program is in tended as a quarterly supplement to other available services within the county, with no guarantee that quan tities will be sufficient to serve all who arc eligible. Foods arc distrib uted on a first-come, first served ba sis. Food stamp households must bring their white authorization card and their green ID card. A house hold is considered a food stamp household if they received food stamps during February. For non-food stamp households, the applicant must send a statement authorizing VIC to release com modities to a designated person. The note must include the applicant's name and social security number, household incomc and size and ad dress and die name of the person au thorized to pick up the commodities. County Extending Shot Clinic Hours Working parents are getting a break from the Brunswick County Health Department?evening clinic hours for their children to receive immunizations. The department's general clinic will be open the first Thursday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. starting March 4, said Jan Rcichenbach, public health educa tor. No appointment is necessary and there is no charge for the immuniza tions. The note should also indicate that no one else from that household is ap plying. Participants arc asked to provide their own box or container for the food. Anyone with questions should contact Fisher at VIC, 754-4766. Pageant Scheduled The R & R Foundation and the N.C. Central University Gamma Gamma Chapter of Theta Phi Beta Sorority will sponsor the Little Miss Archoncttc Pageant at 7 p.m. April 3 at Shalloue Middle School. Brunswick County Literacy Council Coloring Contest Encouraged Reading Three county students received S50 savings bonds Feb. 8 as winners of the Brunswick County Literacy Council coloring contest VISTA volunteer Linda Crothcrs said winners, by division, were as follows: Michael Inman, Ash, kinder garten, Waccamaw Elementary, K-l; Brittany Bocker, Calabash, third grade. Union Elementary, 2-3; and Falon Hardee, Leland, fourth grade, Leland Middle, 4-5. Honorable mention certificates went to these Union Elementary students: Stephanie Mann, 6, Calabash; Brandon Radford and Brandon Frink, second grade; Paul Mathews, third grade; and Ariental Fullwood, fourth grade. Students in six county schools were invited to color copies of an original drawing by artist and council vol unteer tutor Peg Brown that depicted "the old woman who lived in a shoe". Judges were Eric Pfeiffer, artist, and Mary Quinlan, tutor, both members of the literacy council. The purpose of the project was to promote reading and to generate awareness of the council's primary ser vice, free tutoring to help adulLs improve their reading and writing skills.
