County Will Name New Spelling Champ A new Brunswick County Spel ling Bee champion will he named when 17 grade-level winners from six schools compete March 25 at Supply Elementary School at 7:30 p.m. Heather Heavcncr, 1992 champi on, lost her chance to advance to this year's finals in the last minutes of the eighth grade bee at Shallottc Middle School Thursday. She stum bled on the word "leguminous," spelling it "lagominus," to finish third. However, the field of spellers on March 25 will include another past county champion, Leslie Myrie Jr. of Southport, son of Gladys and Leslie Myrie Sr. An eighth grade student at South Brunswick Middle School, Myrie was first runner-up for the county championship in 1990, county champion in 1991 and first runner-up again last year. This is his final year of eligibility to competc. At Shallottc Middle, Caroline Sheffield spelled "oratory" then "ali bi" in the final round to clinch the eighth grade spot after Neil Anslcy went down on "deficiency." Also representing Shallottc Mid dle School will be Chrissic Hcwctl, seventh grade; Rachel Whcatlcy, sixth grade; and LcAnn Stevens, fifth grade. Other competitors will be as fol lows: Waccamaw Elementary: Belin da Simmons, fifth; Chris Russ, sixth; Erica Minton, seventh; no eighth grade winner. Supply Elementary: Jake Beaube, fifth. Bolivia Klementarv: Tia Corbctt, fifth. South Brunswick Middle: Eliza beth Martin, sixth; Billy James, sev enth; and Leslie Myrie Jr., eighth. Southport Elementary: Andrew Novotny, fifth. Leland Middle: Justin Yow, fifth; Loranda Ballard, sixth; Dc sircc Russ, seventh; and Chris Mor ris, eighth. The Brunswick County Spelling Bee is locally cosponsored by the S hallo tie Junior Woman's Club and the Stale Port Pilot of Southport, with the assistance of local mer chants. Debbie Lemon is the bee di rector. Brunswick County's champion will compete in the Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee in Wash ington, D.C., in May, receiving an all-cxpenscs-paid trip thai includes sightseeing in the nation's capital. Informational Literacy Program At Southport Is About Dyslexia An informational session on dyslexia will be presented March 9 in South port hy Jim Henderson of Long Beach, an apprentice literacy trainer. The program will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce office on Long Beach Road. The meeting is sponsored by the Oak Island-Boiling Spring Lakes Southport Satellite Group of the Brunswick County Literacy Council. Open to all interested area resi dents, the session will be particular ly useful for tutors working with the literacy council. Designed to provide support and information to students and tutors in their local area, the satellite meets every other month.
