DKAN KDWAKD SMITH Dean Edward Smith, 29, of Miami Bcach. Fla., died Feb. 18 in Miami Bcach. A graveside service was held Feb. 20 at Nonhwood Cemetery, South port, with the Rev. Mike Morris and the Rev. P.D. Midgctt officiating. Smith was born in Southport on Nov. 21, 1963, a son of Robert E. Buck" and Linila Garner Smith. He moved to Miami Beach three years ago. A graduate of N.C. State University with a degree in architec ture, he was district manager of a bed and breakfast chain in Florida. Survivors includc his father. Robert E. "Buck" Smith of South port; his mother, Linda Gamer Smith of Morehcad City; a brother, Robert Darrin Smith of Rocky Mount; a sister Terrc Wrenn of Raleigh; grandparents Geneva Smith of Southport and Otis and Mary Gamer of Morehcad City; three uncles and a nephew. ERNESTINE BREW TIIARP Ernestine Brew Tharp, 87, of Le land, died Feb. 17 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center, NVilm. The funeral was Feb. 20 in New Hope Baptist Church, Phoenix, with the Rev. James R. Smith and the Rev. Oliver Woodcock officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. She was bom April 11, 1905, in Brunswick County, to the late Daniel A. and Annie Chinnis Brew. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Survivors includc a daughter, Barbara E. Smith of the home; three granddaughters, Vickie L. Brown and Glenda S. O'Lcary, both of Lcland, and Melody A. Brown of the home; and five great-grandchil dren. THERESA SMITH WILSON Theresa Smith Wilson of Lcland died Feb. 17 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilm ington, following a lengthy illness. She was 76. The funeral was Feb. 20 in Wood burn Presbyterian Church, conduct ed by the Rev. Franklin Toole Jr. Burial was in Grccnlawn Memorial Park, Wilmington. She was horn in Gosficld South Township, Canada, on July 8, 1916, the daughter of the late Ollic Whither and Margcrt Annie Dohmcr Smith. She was a member of Wood burn Presbyterian Church. She was born in Ash on June 26, 1921, the daughter of the late John Kelly and Lillic Carlisle Ludlum. She was employed for 33 years with Timmc Corporation. RALPH CARLTON STOVALL Ralph Carlton Stovall, 77, of Lexington died Feb. 25 in Shallottc. The funeral was March 1 at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, Lexington, with burial in Forest Hills Cemetery. Stovall was born in Anderson, S.C., on May 13, 1915, and was the son of the late Richard David and Mary McLane Stovall. He was re tired from the Davidson County Sheriffs Department where he served as a jailer. Stovall was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was a charter member of the Woodmen of The World Camp 1069 in Lexington. Survivors include two sons. Buddhists Plan Ceremony The Buddhist Association of North Carolina will observe Magha Pucha Day in a ceremony Sunday, March 7, beginning at 9:45 a.m., at its monastery site on Midway Road. Bolivia. Magha Pucha Day takes place on the full moon of the third lunar month and is considered an impor tant festival of Buddhism. It com memorates when the Buddha's 1,250 disciples assembled to pay re spect to him without prior arrange ment. The Buddha took the opportu nity to proclaim the fundamental principles of Buddhism: not to do any bad action, to do gtxxl deeds and to purify the mind. Sunday's ceremony will include a money tree as part of fund raising for the multipurpose building under con struction. Dinner will be served, and a sermon by the presiding monk, with translation into English, will be followed by a period of meditation and installation of a statue of Buddha on the multipurpose building. Reaching Out Is Focus A countywide evangelism rally will be held by the Brunswick Baptist Association today (Thurs day) at 7 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church on Midway Road, Bolivia. Richard Everett is the guest speaker, with a monologue by Jeff Johnson and special music planned. Lee grew up in Florence, S.C. In high school, he excelled in athletics. He attended a small junior college in N.C. and the Baptist College in Charleston, S.C. After attending one semester at the Baptist College, Let* enlisted in the Marine Corps and spent one year in Vietnam. Upon completing military service, he later returned to a society that had changed drastically. He became a junkie with a steady diet of heroin, morphine and speed. On Dec. 26, 1973, while reading a Bible he had received from his younger sister as a Christmas present, he realized that Jesus was the ' answer to all of his problems. He asked Jes us to come into his heart. Immediately he was saved and delivered withdrawal free LEE RONEY from drug addiction. The Lord baptized him in the Holy Spirit. He then joined a small Full Gospel Church where he later served as a deacon. He went to work full-time for the Nicky Cruz Home for Boys in Florence, S.C. , working with alcoholics and drug addicts, wit nessing on the streets, in bars and in jails where many were saved, delivered and healed. Lee married, then went to Dallas, Texas to attend Christ for the Nations Bible Institute. During that time, Lee and his wife became Youth Directors of Wynnewood Pres. Church. Upon gra duation, Lee became Associate Pastor at Living Faith Christian Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he helped establish a two year Bible College. He then moved to Charleston, S.C., founded and pastored New Joy Fellowship (church). Lee also co-founded and is currently pastoring Living Word Church, a fast-growing Full Gospel; Church in Chad bourn, N.C. DIRECTIONS: Follow Hwy. 130 toward Holden Beach.
