Beck, Hollowell Win President's Cup Tourney June Bcck won the first flight and Edna Hollowcll capturcd the second flight in the second annual Presi dent's Cup Tournament held recent ly at Brick Landing Plantation. The match play tournament, spon sored by the Brick Landing Ladies Golf Association, was contested over a four-week period. In more recent action at The Brick, the women's group was di vided into three flights for a low gross and low net event last Thurs day. Low gross winners were Alice Grossman in the first flight, Bcck in the second and Hollowcll in the third. Capturing low net honors were Peg Campana in the top flight, Martha Cullcn in the second flight and Terry Ehlcrs in the third. Beck had a chip-in at the fourth hole and Sue Nelson chippcd in at the 14th. Sea Trail Men Herb Holman, Bob Dclancy, Don Lowry and Howard Van Dusen shot 122 to win the Sea Trail Men's Golf Association tournament last Tues day. Playing the Maples coursc, teams counted one best oaii on the first six holes, two net balls on the next six and three balls on the final six. Finishing second with a score of 128 was the foursome of Marv Peters, Doug Mehnc, Bill Burkart and Bill Jones. George Becrman, Ray Dillon, Ed Hughes and Dave Llewellyn shot 130 to tic for third with Ed Bye, Joe Polanski, Clarence Brown and Augie Douglass. John Pointer, George Gallop, Dick Zinser and Dale Stanton placed fifth with 133. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Al Consalvi at the third hole, Burkart at the fifth, John Walker al the 11 th and Brown at the 17th. Brierwood Ladies The team of Mary Schaack, Dot Crean, Sally Dye and Peg Stcincr shot 111 to win the Brierwood L-adies Golf Association event last Tuesday. Teams counted the three best balls on par threes, two low nets on par fours and one low ball on par fives. Finishing second with a score of 113 was the foursome of Lois Beato, Maureen Farley, Shirley Groff and Pierrette Tompkins. Third place went to the team of Ann Causer, Margaret Wood, Bobbye Cordisco and Emily Laughlin with a 115. Rose Reiter, Ruth Linder, Esther Golfing Action Smith and Dodie Nicland placcd fourth with a round of 116. Bclty Maerker chippcd in for birdie al the 14th hole. Causer had a chip-in at the fourth hole. Carding birdies were Bcato at the 14th and Claire Aston at the 17th. CS Travel League Glenn Sook, Jim Reagan, Bob Matteson and Ed Johnson combined for a net 54 and won the Carolina Shores Men's Travel League event last Friday at Colonial Charters. Second placc in the best ball tour nament went to the foursome of Tony Santino, Claude Tyson, Chet Palcsko and Gene Miltner with a 59. On a match of cards, the team of Bob Lupean, jim rvianony, Tom Brcndgord and Jack Baumeister placcd third with net 60. Finishing fourth with 60 was the group of Stu Thorn, Mike Hcaly, Bob Wcingarten and Hubic Hinkcl. John Ward, Pat Kelly, George Anderson and Charlie Abamo placcd fifth, also with net 60. Calabash Veterans The foursome of Bob Hallcr, Herb Ocllerich, Lou Sommers and Bob Borstock finished with minus 5 points to win the Calabash Veterans Golf Association Stablcford team tournament Saturday at River Hills. Finishing second with minus 6 points was the team of Ray Erick scn, Larry Bollinger, Bob Stilwcll and Bill Flynn. Wash Dayton, Joe Marcottc, Ed Jackson and Bill Reese placcd third with minus 11 points. On a match of cards, fourth placc went to the foursome of Harry Roper, Rob Robinson, Bob Phillips and Dick Mce with minus 13 points. Placing fifth with minus 13 was the team of Lew Meyer, Fred Hall Clyde Schramm and Harry Birnie The Calabash Veterans group is scheduled to play Friday morning at Ocean Isle Beach Golf Course. Ruth's Renegades Joan Turns, Arlenc Singleton and Jean Caizzio tied for first placc with rounds of 30 in the Ruths Renegades crossover tournament last Thursday at Bricrwood. Dot Frey was second with net 31, and Evelyn Wuthrich finished third with a 32. Singleton chipped in at the sixth hole and also had the over all low gross of i 22 and low net of 82. In other recent action, Wuthrich shot net 26 to win the Ruth's Renegades crossover tournament at Land O' Lakes Golf Course in Whitcville. Runners-up included Jackie Storm with net 28 and Carolynn D'Avanzo with 28.5. Mary Clute had the overall low gross of 101, and Use Bateman had the low net of 61. Carolina Shores Men Ray Kennedy, George Hartley, George Bowcn and John Romero shot 142 to win the Carolina Shores Men's Golf Association event Saturday. Teams counted one low net ball and one low gross ball on cach hole. On a match of cards, second place went to the foursome of Ed Garvcy, Dick Bcndin, Ted Paliwoda and Bill Ricc with a 147. Sea Trail Couples Winners were recognized on the front nine and back nine in the Sea Trail Couples mixed scramble Feb. 28 on the Byrd course. Two teams tied for first place on the back nine. Keith Curry, Dave Llewellyn, Nancy Williams and Nin Consalvi shot two under par to tie John Walker, Jim Blanda, Joan Llewellyn and Carol Peters. The front nine proved more diffi cult as the winning team of Bill Wallers, John Stokes, Louisa Cilento and Betty Gccscy finished at even par. Marv Peters, Rick Rcdekcr, Shir ley Hclmke and Janet Coniglio shot two over par to tie Joe Rcid, Butch Hclmke, Robin Walters and Ruth Kivctt for second place on the front nine. Brierwood Men Bill Allen, Jim Bryant, Cal Colapictro and Paul Kcclcy shot 11 - under-par 133 to win the Bricrwood Men's Golf Association event Saturday. Teams counted one low gross ball and one low net ball on cach hole. Finishing sccond with 137 was ihc team of Hollcn Groff, Jack Causer, Hugh McCullough and Bill Golds berry. Neal McCall, Joe Rcitcr, Hal Schulcr and Dick Baxter shot 139 to tie for third with the foursome of Fcrgic Nicol, Biii Pingo, Gene Lof lin and Jerry Smith. In the two best ball event last Thursday, the team of Jim Roach, Joe Reiter and Ned Dye shot 126 to capture first place. Finishing nine shots back in scc ond placc was the team of Dave Harper, Howard Scutt and Jerry Lula. On March 1. two teams lied for first placc in a best ball tournament at Bricrwood. Teams counted the low net ball and high net ball on each hole. The Recs Jones course was rated 32nd, and the Dan Maples layout was chosen as the 50th best course in the state, according to a news re lease. UNC-Wilmington placed first out of 16 teams in the Cheerwinc Challenge of the Carolinas goir tournament held over the weekend at Lockwood Golf Links. The Scahawks posted a two-day total of 605 to edge USC-Aikcn by four strokes. Finishing third with 625 was Anderson College. North Carolina schools claimed eight of the lop 10 spots. UNCW's Cuthill led the individual standings with rounds of 71 and 76 and for a two-day total of 147. Anderson's John Shiflet was second with 149, followed by David Quick of USC-Aikcn with 150. Finishing at 151 were Brian Kassel of USC-Aikcn, Scott Crocker and Lee Watson of UNCW, and first-round leader Ed Reevey of USC-Aikcn Rounding out the top 10 were Catawba's Joe Bolcy and Pfeiffcr's Steve Armstrong with scorcs of 152 and UNC-Grecnsboro's John McCann with 153. Catawba College hosted the tournament, which featured a practicc round on Friday and competition Saturday and Sunday. Coach David Bennett said he hopes to make the tournament an annual event.
