Hospital To Participate In
Diabetes Awareness 'Alert'
The Brunswick Hospital at Sup
ply will offer special screenings and
an information hotline Tuesday,
March 23, as an official alert center
for the American Diabetes Asso
ciation, said Earl Tamar, chief exec
utive officer.
From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
to 8 p.m. in the conference room,
staff nurses will administer diabetes
risk tests. The test is a questionnaire
which assists individuals in deter
mining if they are at risk of becom
ing diabetic. It also helps them be
come aware of the symptoms of the
disease, which arc often difficult to
detect. For those individuals who
meet high-risk criteria, free glucose
checks will be available.
A diabetes information hotline
will be staffed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.,
offering information on the disease,
its detection and treatment. Numbers
to call are 754-8029 or 754-8059.
According to the North Carolina
Affiliate of the American Diabetes
Association, 14 million people in the
United States have diabetes.
However, more than half are un
aware they have the disease. This
year more than 750,000 people will
be diagnosed as having diabetes;
150,000 will die. Individuals with
diabetes are also at high risk for
heart and kidney disease, stroke,
blindness and amputation.
Anyone who is over 30, over
weight or has a family history of di
abetes is at risk of suffering from the
disease. Black Americans and His
panics are 55 percent more likely to
have diabetes than Caucasians,
while American Indians are 300 per
cent more likely to have diabetes.
Symptoms of the disease develop
slowly and include excessive thirst,
frequent urination, extreme fatigue,
unexplained weight loss and blurry
vision from time to time.
The primary goal of the American
Diabetes "alert" is early detection of
high risk individuals, said Daphne
Yarborough, hospital marketing di
rector.
For more information about alert
related activities, contact Sherry
Hendricksen, R.N., at The Bruns
wick Hospital, 754-8121.
