In Brunswick District Court
Three ol the four people charged
with running an illegal lottery at a
Leland mobile home park were
found guilty in Brunswick County
District Court last week of possess
ing and selling lottery tickets.
Hardie Ballard Jr., 39, Mary Jane
Ballard, 37, and Latoya Benita
McKinney, 16, all of Lang Trail,
Leland, were found guilty on one
count each of possession of lottery
tickets, selling lottery tickets and
possession of drug paraphernalia.
Hardie Ballard also was found
guilty of selling alcoholic beverages
without a permit.
Another defendant in the case,
Tommic Catherine McKinney, 41, of
Atlanta, Ga? was found not guilty
on similar charges.
Hardie Ballard was sentenced to
six months in prison, suspended
three years on the condition that he
serve 21 days in Brunswick County
Jail, pay a S2,(XX) fine and court
costs and submit warrentless search
es and drug tests. He was ordered to
undergo an assessment for substance
abuse and to not associated with
drug users or dealers. He was put on
supervised probation for three years.
Mary Ballard was given a six

years probation and fined S2,000
and court costs. She was ordered to
perform 72 hours of community ser
vice, to not consume any illegal sub
stances, to not associate with any
drug users, to submit to searches and
drug tests and to have a substance
abuse assessment.
McKinney was sentenced to six
months, suspended on the condition
that she perform 48 hours of com
munity service and submit to war
rantless searches and drug tests. She
was ordered not to possess or con
sume any illegal drugs and to remain
in school and attempt to complete
her high school education. She was
ordered to pay court costs.
All three appealed their convic
tions to superior court
The four defendants were among
nine arrested after the Brunswick
County Sheriff's Department raided
two trailers in the Phoenix commu
nity near Leland in January.
Detectives seized a pound of white
powder believed to be cocaine,
SI6,000 worth of gold jewelry, 42
cases of beer, numerous bottles of
liquor, a Dodge van and about
25,000 lottery tickets.
Police said Hardie Ballard was
the kingpin for a five-county gam
bling operation in which participants
placed beLs on the winning three
digit number in the New York or
Illinois lotteries.
Five others arrested in the case
face felony drug charges in superior
court.
District Court Judge Napoleon
Barefoot Jr. presided over court
Tuesday and Wednesday (March 9
and 10), while Judge Jack Hooks
heard cases Thursday. Assistant
District Attorney Don Kelly prose
cuted.
