Local Ceramics Instructor Claims Top Prize; Seven Students Win Awards Also A local ccramics instructor Ux>k the top pn/c and seven of her stu dents earned other awards at the South Carolina Ceramic Association annual show held Maivh 20-21 at MyrtJe Beach Convention Center in Myrtle Beach. S.C. For the second consecutive year. Rose Hadnoi of Holden Beach re ceived the Peggy Award, the highest award given for professional creativ ity and work in ceramics. Her entry was a 12-inch glazed pillar vase with a Mack stain design. In the child's category, Jennifer Sexton, 13, of Supply won the tro phy for the best in the age 13-17 competition for a Christmas scene in stains. Six other students placed in the hobbyist category, with five earning best in category. Carolyn Sexton of Supply won best in category and blue ribbon for a Christmas carolers scene in stains. Lee Sexton of Supply won best in category and blue ribbon for a southwestern pillar vase in glazes. Janet Nichols of Supply won best in category and blue ribbon for a dry brush stein. John Innian of Shallottc Point best in category lor a fisherman, a stained picce. and also best in cate gory for a dry brushed wood duck. Wendy Raleigh of Supply won best in category and a blue ribbon for a pair of clowns in black and white stains and a blue ribbon for a cockatoo done in stains. Gena Gore of Shallotte won sec ond place for a dry brushed owl. Categories in the competition in clude professional, advanced hobby ists, hobbyists, child, senior and handicapped. "They're really good. They were surprised at how good they arc," said Hadnot. "This has been really good for them. They're already working getting ready for next year's show." Two Advance In Optimist Contest Two students at Shallottc Middle School are winners of the first Opt imist International Oratorical Con test sponsored by the Optimist Club of the South Brunswick Islands Heather Heavener and Sean Pruitt will advance to zone competition April 21 in Whiteviiie. Winners of that event will compcte at the dis trict level for SI,500 scholarships. The two both spoke on the subject "I Can Make A Difference." Second-place and runner-up med allions were presented to Jenny Lee Trest and Ashley Nicholc Hardy in the girls' division and Charlie Ray in the boys' division. All three are students at Shallotte Middle School.
