"It's fairly tightly bundled in the lop four," South Brunswick Coach Gene Doane said last week. "One slip-up and anything can happen." West Brunswick boasts the conference's top two golfers in Jeremy Grainger and Joey Stadick. Grainger is averaging 76 and Stadick 76.5 in two rounds. South Brunswick golfers claim five of the next six lop spots. Leading the Cougars arc Jeff Howard with a 77 average. Pal Jones and Daniel Kopp at 78, Andy Broadwell at 78.5 and Kevin McKeithan ai 80. North Brunswick's Scott Roberts is averaging 79.5 to lead the Scorpions, who trail South Brunswick by about 75 strokes in the team standings. Both West Columbus and Fairmont arc more than 100 shots off the pace. Waccamaw Conference play resumes Monday when West Brunswick hosts a match at Brick Landing Plantation starting at 2 p.m. Doane said the league match at Fairmont rained out March 15 will be made up next week, possibly Wednesday or Thursday. The final confer ence match of the season will be April 26 at West Columbus. Although it won't count in the standings, South's Cougars won last week's Waccamaw Conference golf match, held Tuesday at The Gaundct at St. James Plantation. But the Trojans hope the 1993 league race follows the same path it did in 1992. West Brunswick won the Waccamaw in a playoff last year after splitting two regular-season matches with Whitevillc and finish ing tied at 11-1. Although more than half of the 1993 conference season remains, neither West Brunswick nor Whitevillc should lose to any other league opponents the rest of the way. That means the conference title will likely be decided April 22 when Whitevillc visits West. "I can see it coming down to what it did last year," West Brunswick Coach Marti Gillis said last week. "The pressure's going to be on us to keep winning and tic it up when they come here." In last Wednesday's match, the teams split the six singles matches and Whitevillc won two of three in doubles.
