All Migrant
Registered
Housing Must Be
45 Days Ahead
All migrant housing must be reg
istered with the state 45 days before
migrant workers arrive.
That's the reminder North Caro
lina State Labor Commissioner Har
ry E. Payne Jr. is issuing for all
farms and agricultural businesses
that are hiring migrants for the 1993
season.
Registration application cards arc
available from county cooperative
extension offices, county health de
partments and the Department of
Labor's Migrant Housing Division,
according to Jan Reichcnbach, pub
lic health educator with the Bruns
wick County Health Department.
Following registration, employers
arc required to have water and
sewage systems in migrant houses
inspected by local health officials
and to have a prcoccupancy inspec
tion by the Migrant Housing Div
ision.
Last year the labor department in
spected more than 1,100 migrant
housing camps in 83 counties.
This year Payne said special em
phasis will be placed on dwellings
that have not been registered in the
past.
"In all fairness to the growers
who are maintaining the required
standards in their housing, we can
not ignore those individuals who are
not in compliance," he said.

ARSON is suspected in a fire that gutted two rooms of a mobile home on Mt. Pisgah Road Thursday
night.
Man Charged
In Mobile Home Arson
Quick action by local firefighters was credited with
preserving evidence that helped investigators determine
that a mobile home on Mt. Pisgah Road, Supply, was in
tentionally set on fire Thursday night.
Stcfanc Vcmard Pierce, 31, has been arrested and
charged with anion of the trailer he formerly shared with
his wife, according to Brunswick County Sheriff's De
tective Charlie Miller.
Civietown Volunteer Fire Chief A1 Nord and Tri
Bcach Fire Chief Doug Todd arrived at the fire shortly
after a 911 call was received from the Pierce's wife,
Sandra Hewett Pierce, at 11:43 p.m. Firefighters from
both departments responded.
"We had a truck on the road in three minutes," said
Nord. "The guys were really on the ball that night."
Flames were pouring from the master bedroom
when firefighters arrived. They quickly knocked down
the blaze, Nord said.
Miller also responded to the scene, having investi
gated a domestic disturbance at the home the previous
night. He advised firefighters to disturb as little of the
fire scene as possible, Nord said.
Pierce and his wife had split up after the Wednesday
incident. Miller said. As a result, the husband had
moved out of the 1993 mobile home owned by Sandra
Pierce's mother.
A State Bureau of Investigation fire investigator de
termined that the fire had been intentionally set, possibly
by lighting the pages of a telephone book found on what
remained of a bed in the master bedroom. Miller said.
Acting on information gathered at the scene and
from a witness who saw someone running down the
road toward N.C. 130 after the fire. Miller arrested
Pierce and charged him with second-degree arson. He is
free on S25.000 bond.
The fire was largely contained to the bedroom and
kitchen, with smoke damage throughout the trailer, Nord
said. He estimated the structural damage at about S5.000.
"The fire departments did an excellent job of con
taining the fire and preserving the scene," Miller said.
