LEON DUNCAN ..Amelia Graves ADMISSION IS FREE 'Old Baldy' Reopens To Public "Old Baldy," the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina, marked its 176th birthday in April with the reopening of its 108 newly renovated steps to the top. The 110-foot historic landmark is located on Bald Head Island, acces sible by a 20-minute passenger ferry from Southport. Old Baldy, with its distinctive octagonal shape and off centered lanthom, is a short walk from the ferry landing. The lighthouse is open daily from sunrise to sunset. From the top, there is a 10-mile panoramic view of the area. Admission is free; cost of the ferry ride is $15 per person, round trip. Old Baldy was built in 1817 as a beacon for vessels crossing the Cape Fear Bar and navigating the river channel. In 1861, after the start of the Civil War, it was closed. Later it operated as an interim light and served as a radio beacon during World War II. The lighthouse was decommis sioned in 1935 and replaced by the Cape Fear Lighthouse, located clos er to the hazardous Frying Pan Shoals, and later by the automated Oak Island Lighthouse. In 1985, a commiuee formed the Old Baldy Foundation, Inc., a non profit organization dedicated to restoring and preserving the struc ture. In 1990, Old Baldy underwent 1 BOOKWORM' Remember our large stock of used books and our great selection of new titles like ^PRAETORIAN by Thomas Glfford and HEALING AND THE MIND by Bill Moyers. located at the bridge to Holden Beach \M2 Mon.-Sat. 10-6, Sun. 1-6 FAX AND PHOTOCOPY 7380 fflBH an extensive exterior renovation, and, in 1991, a fundraising cam paign was launched for the interior restoration.
