Monday-Saturday 9-5 Food Folks Shopping Center * Shallotte West Seniors Petition For Early Exams BY SUSAN USHER A majority of West Brunswick High School's senior class wants to take final exams early, in pan so border line students will know whether they have passed or failed before graduation day. "I think a senior deserves at least 48 hours notice of whether he is going to pass or fail after taking an ex am," senior Lauren Boytc told the Brunswick County Board of Education Monday night. Boyte is the author of a petition she presented to the board signed by a ma jority of the school's 217-mcmber class. The petitioners ask that seniors to be allowed to take their exams Wednesday through Friday, June 2-4. The current June 4, 7 and 8 exam schedule would have some seniors possibly taking their last exam at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday before graduation on Wednesday evening. 'That gives teachers less than 24 hours to grade ex ams and notify students," Boyte said. "I understand the alternative for teachers (who haven't been able to notify a student sooner) would be to pull the student out of line before we march." Superintendent Ralph J. Johnston said no decision would be made without first consulting with high school principals. However, he said that the "spirit" of the state's 180-day school atlcndancc requirement would be met if seniors participated in graduation prac tice at least a half day each June 7 and 8. If seniors at West Brunswick arc allowed to take ex ams early, the same privilege will be extended to se niors at South Brunswick and North Brunswick. Board member William Fairley asked, "Arc we just writing off the last two days of school? That's what it sounds like to me." "Yes and no," responded fellow board member Polly Russ. Under the original school calendar for 192-93, she noted, all high schools would have held graduation ex ercises June 12 in Brunswick Community College's Odell Williamson Auditorium. When the school board responsed to students' pleas to allow graduation to be held instead on individual school campuses, the gradua tion date was moved to June 9, the day after the last day of school and the last day for exams. The exam sched ule was not changed. In making up this year's calendar, an effort was made to make sure 180 days of school would be sched uled for seniors. The new schedule also did away with some teachers having to schedule exams for the same class twice, once for seniors and then a week later for underclassmen.
