Elementary School Integrates Art Education With Academic Studies "Integration" is the key word when describing arts education at Supply Elementary School, says art tcachcr Memory Goforth. "While students felt they were creating art, their teacher's goal was that they would be developing their academic knowledge in other subject matter as well," she said. Students' efforts in the visual arts have paid off with recognition throughout the year and will culminate June 2 with an arts festival from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school. Fifth grader Charles Marce and fourth graders Sean Goforth were recognized for their participation in a first year effort at a statewide art exchange. Their batik art work is louring Southeastern North Carolina for a year as part of a traveling an exhibit. Another fifth grader, Roy Honeycutt, has a metal punch of a bam displayed as part of the Superintendent's Choice Art at the central office in Southport. Scottie Pahl, also in fifth grade, received a personal "thank you" from 14th District state Rep. Dewey Hill (D-Columbus County) for a colored pencil drawing of a bird on a branch. The drawing bccamc Hill's inviiaiion to the State's An Advocate Legislative Dinner in April. Hill thanked the school for supporting efforts to make arts an integrated part of the state's educational and eco nomic development. Natia Brown, Crystal Driver, Brooke Evans and Justin Fulford, all fifth grade students, received honor mentions for their entries in the "What the News Taught Me" program sponsored by The Wilmington Morning Star, a regional daily newspaper. Their artwork will be placed on newsstand covers. Third grade student Beth Long received honorable mention for her entry in the countywide "Heal the World" poster contest sponsored during Youth Week. The students were to illustrate their feelings regarding pollution, drugs, homeless families, poverty, gangs or other social ills. On June 2, Supply students will celebrate the arts with an, drama, dance and creative writing projects completed this year. The daylong event is open to the public.
