Pickett joined the newspaper almost six years pickett ago as a layout and copy editor in the sports department. The 1982 Appalachian State Uni versity graduate was previously sports editor at The Watauga Dem ocrat in Boone and The Elkin-Jones villc Tribune in Elkin. Pickett covered high school sports for The Brunswick Beacon while a student at West Brunswick High School, where he graduated in 1978. He and his wife, Diannc, and son, Brandon, 9, live in Charlotte. Pickett is the son of Annie Pickett Marlowe of Shallottc and the late Harry Pickett Sr. He is the grandson of Gertrude Williams and Isabel Pickett, both of Shallottc. Elected At UNCG Christopher G. Leslie, a rising ju nior from Yaupon Beach, has been elected vice president of student govern ment at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for the 1993-94 academic year. Leslie is the LESLIE son of Philip D. and Sallie S. Leslie. He is a graduate of Cary Senior High School and has been involved in student government at UNGG for two years. The Student Government Asso ciation promotes the interests of stu dents while acting as a liaison be tween the administration and the student body. Employee Of Month Cathy Lewis has been chosen The Brunswick Hospital's "Employee of the Month" for May 1993. Lewis is a secretary in the hospi tal's administration department. "Cathy has a very positive atti tude," said a fellow employee who nominated her. "She is always pre pared to assist hospital personnel whenever necessary. When all else fails, I can count on Cathy to lend a helping hand, whatever the task." Lewis received a rosebud corsage, a complimentary meal and a cash prize. She has been with The Brunswick Hospital for seven years. Chosen For School Two Brunswick County students will be among 270 from 51 counties of eastern North Carolina participat ing in the annual Legislators' School for Youth Leadership Development at East Carolina University. They arc Yarbi Lemon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lemon of Shal lottc, and Lamarr Hardy, son of Jackie and James Hardy Jr., also of Shalloue. The students were nominated by their local schools for having de monstrated leadership potential. General As sembly. Norris Graduates Barbara Norris of Shalloue was graduated May 1 from Heritage Bible College in Dunn with a bachelor's de gree in religious education. Norris plans to begin work in the fall toward a master's degree. She serves as norris dean of women and financial aid of ficer at the college and edits its newsletter. She is the wife of Gene Norris and the mother of Buddy Norris, Teresa Morton and Melissa Ethc ridgc. AJI-American Scholar Kevin Chilton, the 16-year-old grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Paroda Sr. of Supply, has been named an All-Amcrican Scholar National Award winner. His biogra phy and photograph will appear in the United States Achievement Aca demey National Awards Yearbook. NCCU Graduate Toni Randolph and Marion Nat haniel Reaves Sr. of Shalloue have announced the forthcoming graduation of their daughter, Chcri A. Ran dolph, from N.C. Central University in Durham. The cere monies will take Randolph place May 15. Randolph will be awarded a bache lor of science degree in criminal jus tice. Aboard Nimitz Navy Airman Recruit Alvin R. Burncy, son of Carol A. and Alvin R. Bumcy Sr. of Supply, rcccnily deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, homeportcd in Bremer ton, Wash., for six months to the Western Pacific as part of a nine ship battle group. The Nimit/. is designed to support and operate aircraft that engage in attacks on airborne, afloat and ashore targets which threaten use of the sea. The carrier also can engage in sustained operations in support of other forces. Bumcy, a 1989 graduate of West Brunswick High School, joined the Navy in August 1992. Bus Drivers Honored Three bus drivers with the Brunswick County Public Schools were honored last week for out standing performance on the job, Assistant Superintendent Bill Turner said Monday. Graver Gore, a 15-ycar driver for Southport Elementary School, was named Outstanding Driver of the Year. Two other drivers received plaques for taking actions that most likely saved students' lives, said Turner. South Brunswick Middle School driver Susan Gore was recognized for quick action on Dec. 4, 1992, in evacuating students from a bus that burst into flames only minutes later. Shallouc Middle School driver Mallic Bryant was recognized for her quick response on March 19 when it was apparent a logging truck was not going to slop on U.S. 17 at Supply in time to avoid rear-ending her bus.
