Brunswick Unit 2 Nears Full Power BY SUSAN USHER Unit 2 at Carolina Power & Light Co.'s Brunswick Nuclear Plant could be up to full power generation by the end of the week, if only for testing purposes. Utility spokesman Mac Harris said Tuesday that the turbine control system is being tested early this week at power levels ranging from 70 percent to 90 percent this week, after reaching a 35 percent power benchmark last Friday. The control system keeps the turbine running at a steady speed even as power output changes up and down. Testing at changing power levels is required to make sure it works properly. Friday evening the Nuclear Regu latory Commission concurred with CP&L management that was all right to continue increasing to full power. After completing testing Monday at the 60 percent level, a company checkpoint, CP&L decid ed to keep going. Tuesday marked the eighth day the plant has been on the utility's "grid," that is, providing electricity for distribution. Because of testing at various power levels, the megawatiage generated has also varied. "It's going very well," said Harris. "One indication of that is that we elected not to take that First contingency shutdown. We didn't have anything that required a shut down to fix." A faulty oil pump, leaking valves and two air pumps that didn't work have had to be repaired, but were re paired with the plant in operation. CP&L built into its restart sched ule the option of two 11-day shut downs, one before reaching 35 per cent power, the second after reach ing 100 percent power. "We could reach 100 percent by the end of the week, fairly soon," said Harris. "How long we will stay up depends on how well this series of tests goes and whether we need to take a contingency shutdown." After reaching 100 percent, the restart schedule calls for reducing power to about the 65 percent level for turbine control valve testing, fol lowed by a shutdown if necessary for repairs, then a return to normal oper ation after a year-long shutdown. During that year more than 1,700 repairs and improvements were made, with more still planned. Meanwhile, fuel has been re moved from Unit 1, which has also been shut down for more than a year. With no fuel in the reactor core, the unit can operate at a lower level of emergency readiness. That allows repairs to be made at a faster pace, since more tasks can be done at the same time, Harris said. Bankruptcy Representation Richard C. The two operate the four-unit press with color deck on which the Beacon is printed. Production staffers also include Dorothy Brennan and Brcnda Moore, graphic artists who "have a big hand in ad design as well as typesetting," Swcatt added. This year's seven brings to 66 the number of editorial and advertising awards presented to the Beacon by the N. C. Press Association in the past ten years. The Slate Port Pilot's first place awards are Best Restaurant/Enter tainment Ad, Best Spot Color for Home Furnishing and Appliances, Best Classified Section, Best Shared Page and Best Advertising Cam paign.
