BUSINESS BRIEFS UCB Names Caudle To President's Club Irene Caudle, a banker at UCB's Occan Isle branch office, is one of 59 employees of United Carolina Bancsharcs to receive special recog nition. They have been named members of UCB's President's Club for ex ceeding their company goals and consistently demonstrating superior performance throughout the year. They qualified out of UCB's 1,900 total employees. They and their guests were hon ored at a banquet during the Pre sident's Club weekend May 21-23 at Grove Park Inn in Ashevillc. United Carolina Bank and United Carolina Bank of South Carolina, operate 130 offices in 76 Carolina communities. Osteopath Becomes Board Certified Dr. Patrick K. Ryan of Little River Medical Center was recently notified of his board certification in general practice by the American Osteopathic Board of General Practice. Dr. Ryan, an osteopathic physi cian, earned his bachelor's degree in biology from California State Univ ersity at Fullenon. He graduated from the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri. He completed a one-year rotating internship and a two-year residency program in general practicc at Still Regional Medical Center in Jefferson City, Missouri. Dr. Ryan has been practicing at Little River Medical Center since August 1992. Pension Seminar Set A one-hour seminar on the Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) retirement plan will be offered at Brunswick Community College north of Supply Tuesday, June 1, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the ALS Building teaching auditorium. The presentation by Roger G. Simmons is aimed at business own ers, sole proprietors and independent contractors. Simmons will discuss the current tax-saving benefits of SEP plans and will discuss tax-de ferred investment growth. Take Real Estate Class On Saturdays An introductory course in real es tate will be offered Saturdays start ing May 29 through Brunswick Community College's Continuing Education Department The class will meet weekly through July 24 on the main campus north of Supply from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. "Fundamentals of Real Estate" will introduce students to the real es tate industry and meets the educa tional requirements of the North Carolina Real Estate Licensing Commission. Students who success fully complete the course can be ad mitted to the real estate sales licens ing examination. The course covers basic principals arid theories of real estate, terminology, state licensing law, organizational structure, broker age, contracts, leases and ownership. Registration costs S35 and the re quired textbook (available at the BCC bookstore) costs $27.50. Construction Tops $1.8 Million Permits were issued for more than SI.8 million worth of new construc tion in Brunswick County during March, including 76 permits for mo bile homes and 13 for other single family dwellings built at an estimat ed cost of S877.218. According to figures compiled by the county planning department, 11 permits were issued for commercial construction valued at S769.050 along with two permits for $44,952 worth of additions, eight for garages valued at $97,100 and three for decks or porches valued at S8.320. There were a total of 388 permits issued during the past month, includ ing 158 for building, 156 elcctrical, 36 plumbing and 38 mcchanical. In the first three months of 1993, there were a total 174 permits issued for mobile homes and 38 for single family homes valued at a total of S2.73 million. The average value of the homes permitted this year is $71,701.
