SPORTING SCENE Police Take On Media For Hope Harbor Home Shalloue Police Chief Rodney Gause is a pretty decent athlete. He's in good shape for a man his age with a couplc of kids. At a softball game last year, Rodney ran full steam into a fence to catch a fly ball. He was slightly injured, but he caught the ball. Gause is a fierce competitor. And while he may never be mis taken for Michael "Air" Jordan on the basketball court, you can bet Rodney will be giving his best when he takes the floor this Saturday night at Supply Elementary School. Chief will lead the Shalloue Police Department against the not-so famous "Media Airballs" in an exhibition game at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Hope Harbor Home, the county's shelter for victims of domestic vio lence. "It's for a good causc and we'll have a good time," Gause said early this week. "We'll probably get beat to death." The Shalloue Police Department has lost to the "Media Airballs" each of the last two years. "The first year we went into double overtime and lost, and last year we got beat bad," Gause said. Chief says he isn't really concerned that the police may lose again this year. They haven't been practicing or diagraming any plays to beat the me dia representatives from Wilmington. Gause and his officers would love to win. But they're playing basket ball, and risking embarrassment, for Hope Harbor Home. No admission will be charged Saturday night, but donations will be taken at the door. Joining Chief Gause from the Shalloue Police Department will be Sgt. Ray Altizer and officers Michael Ferster, David Edwards and Jeff Johnson. N.C. Marine Fisheries Enforcement Officer Gary Mclntyre also is expected to play. The "Media Airballs" include radio personalities Craig Thomas and Mike Farrcll of WGNI, Jim Whitmeyer of SURF 107 and Joey D of B-100. Other team members are Jon Evans and John Randlcman of WWAY TV-3, Dan Henry of WECT-TV 6, and Chris Wright of the Morning Star. Wally Ausley, mayor of Holden Beach and former radio voice of the N.C. State University Wolfpack, will emcee the event. The West Brunswick High School Cheerleaders and Lcland Senior Citizens "Starkkcts" will be on hand to lead the cheers. The Brunswick School of Dance will provide halftime entertainment. The community needs to support this event. If it weren't for donations, Hope Harbor Home couldn't provide the services it docs to battered women and children. Congrats, Lady Scorps Congratulations are in order for the North Brunswick softball team, which ended its season last Friday with a 5-1 loss to Williamston in the sec ond round of the state playoffs. The Lady Scorpions had a great year, finishing first in the Waccamaw 2A Conference with a 13-1 record. North Brunswick was 21-4 overall, win ning four out of five games against 4A schools. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the Lady Scorpions is that they accomplished all of this with one junior, six sophomores and one freshman in the starting lineup. North Brunswick loses just four seniors to graduation. And with Lcland Middle School winning three straight county softball titles, hopes are high for another solid season in 1994. 7^* PHOTO CONTtlBUTtD Waccamaw Conference Champs West Brunswick's junior varsity baseball team recently wrapped up the Waccamaw 2A Conference championship with a 13-1 record.
