Shallotte Middle School Gives Awards To Top Eighth Graders BY SUSAN USHER Clutching two trophies, two plaques and a fistful of certificates. Heather Hcavcner marched with classmates from the Shallottc Mid dle School eighth grade awards pro gram Monday morning. "I've got to find my mom," she said once outside the gym, accepting congratulations from her classmates as she looked over the crowd of stu dents and guests. "Need a wheelbarrow?" a fellow eighth-grader teased in friendly fashion. Heather received some of the school's major awards for eighth graders. These include the Career Club's Award of Excellence recog nizing her work in career cxplo ration at the local and stale levels, and the James Gary Poulos II Mem orial Award, given by the Poulos family each year in memory of Gary, who died in a cave-in at Hol den Beach during his seventh grade year in March 1981. Selection is based on Christian attitudes, schol arship, rcspcct for others and partici pation in extracurricular activities. Heather also received the Lang uage Arts plaque, presented to the eighth grade student who has dem onstrated effort as well as achieving excellence in all areas of the lan guage arts.
