Puppet Ministry Set Friday
A free puppet ministry will be
presented to the public Friday, June
18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Holdcn Beach
Fishing Pier by the youth group of
State Street Baptist Church, Cayce,
S.C.
The group is sponsored by the
Brunswick Baptist Association as
pari of its summer resort ministry
and is also participating in the
Brunswick Islands Baptist Church
building program.
Church Wants Tap-On
Mt. Carmel Primitive Free Will
Baptist Church at Shallotte Point
will hold a barbecue dinner
Saturday, June 19, to raise money to
conncct the church to the Brunswick
County Water System.
"We really would like to get
county water," said spokesman
Carol Hewett.
The pork barbecue dinners will be
served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Mt. Carmel Church is located on
Pigott Road, between Village Point
Road and Brick Landing Road.
VBS Slated
Vacation Bible School will be of
fered at Supply Baptist Church June
21-25 for students birth through age
17.
Sessions will be held from 8:30
a.m. until noon, following the theme
"Summer Shine."

All-Day Service
The Perkins Gospel Singers of
Laurinburg will be featured during an
afternoon singing Sunday, June 20, at
Union Chapel Independent Church.
The singing will begin at about
1:30 p.m., and is part of an all-day
service that includes worship at 11
am. led by Pastor Arthur Spencer,
and a fellowship dinner.
The church is located on Boone's
Neck Road off N.C. 130 east.
Custer At Chapel
The Rev. Dr. Harold Custer, a
minister of the Church of the
Nazarene in Fruitland Park, Fla., is
the pastor of the week at The
Holdcn Beach Chapel.
He will lead the 11 a.m. service at
the nondenominational chapel,
which is located on Rothschild
Street across from the town hall.
A nursery is provided and Sunday
school begins at 10 a.m.
VBS Starts Sunday
Vacation Bible School begins
Sunday, June 20, and continues
through Thursday from 6 p.m. to
8:30 p.m. at Seaside United Metho
dist Church.
Classes will be offered for stu
dents ages 2 through 12. The school
will conclude with a cookout and
program Thursday evening.

HERBERT A. LYNCH
Herbert A. Lynch, Ph.D., 80, of
Ocean Isle Beach, died June 9 in
North Carolina Memorial Hospital
in Chapel Hill. He was a former
management consultant, labor arbi
trator and instructor.
The memorial service was June
11 at St James Episcopal Church,
Shallotte, by the Rev. Dr. Richard
Warner.
Bom in Wilmington on Sept. 8,
1912, he was the son of the late
Herbert Adolphus and Jane Iredell
Green Lynch.
He graduated from N.C. State
University with high honors in
chemical engineering and earned a
doctorate in engineering science
from New \ork University. Lynch
was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran
of World War II and taught at New
York University, City College of
New York and UNC Charlotte. Lo
cally he served in the Shallotte Flo
tilla, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary,
and was a member of St. James the
Fisherman Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife, Doris
Hillcr Lynch of the home; a son,
James Bardcn Lynch of Minne
apolis, Minn.; two daughters, Jane
L. Lynch of Durham and Frances I.
Tuttle of Seville, Ohio; two brothers,
Charles Lynch of Camden, S.C., and
Thomas G. Lynch of Charlotte; a
sister, Jane Harriss of Wilmington;
and two grandchildren.

Geneva Brisson, 81, of Bladen

She was born in New York City
on July 22, 1917, a daughter of the
late John and Kathcrine Nelson
McHugh.

Patrick Lupia; a son, Patrick J. Lup
ia of Kansas City, Mo.; two daugh
ters, Geri Lupia of Calabash and
Maureen Schell of Troy, Mich.; and
three grandchildren.

nal Medical Center, Wilmington.

JAMES DURIAS WARD
James Durias Ward, 82, of South
port died June 12 at his residence.
The funeral was June 15 at South
port Baptist Church, where he was a
member, with the Rev. Wayne Trex
ler officiating. Entombment was in
Cape Fear Memorial Park Maus
oleum.
Ward was born April 2, 1911, in
Longwood, a son of the late Brooks
and Ellen Butler Ward. He had lived
in Southport 57 years. He was a re
tired fircboat chief engineer at
Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny
Point, and was in the appliance ser
vice business for 36 years. He was a
member of the National Association
of Retired Federal Employees and in
the 1930s was a member of the
Civilian Conservation Corps. He
was a lifetime deacon of Southport
Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife. Gertha
Jcnrcue Ward of the home; two
daughters. Omega Harrison of Long
Beach and Joyce Caffee of Leland;
two sons, Charlie E. Ward of Marsh
ville and Roger C. Ward of South
port; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great
grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be
made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice,
the Leukemia Foundation or South
port Baptist Church Building Fund.
