What 100 Tourists A Day Mean To The South Brunswick Islands BY BILL DEARMAN, EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT South Brunswick Islands Chamber Of Commerce As wc tvgin the summer season, I know that in certain areas of influ ence, the idea of thousands of visitors is less than, let's say, a pleasant thought. Traffic will begin to in crease, the stores?especially the grocery stores? will be impossible to shop at on certain days, and all these people will be acting like they have nothing to do but stay up late at night and lie on the beach all day. Our quiet beaches, where just weeks ago you could walk for miles and sec only a handful of faces, arc now filled with people. The smell of suntan lo tion Tills the air, and people determined to get that perfect tan in record time seem to be everywhere. DEARMAN Children of every age and every description appear to be running in every direction all at once. While it is true that the solitude of the area has disappeared for the summer, its disappearance means the appearance of our annual economic booster shot. During the summer season millions of dollars are injected into the local economy, and wc depend on these dollars to ensure our economic well being. Let us consider the economic impact of 100 tourists per day to our area. For every 100 tourists per day, personal income will increase by over $750,000, retail sales will amount to SI,120,000, seven more retail outlets will be successful, and 111 new industry-related jobs will be cre ated. When these figures are compared with what 100 new manufacturing jobs means, the real value of tlx: tourist dollar becomes very clear. One hundred new manufacturing jobs means personal income increases by $410,000, retail sales increase by S331.000, three more retail outlets, and 65 new industry-related jobs. Tourism dollars, just as manufacturing dollars, create economic pros perity. Also, areas that arc attractive to tourists are also attractive to man ufacturers. because of the quality of life resort areas offer. Wc arc very fortunate to live in an area with great potential for the future. As Brunswick County continues to grow and develop we will all benefit. Tourism provides us an excellent base upon which to build a bright future for all. Free Summer Tutoring Will Be Offered Across Brunswick County A free summer tutoring program for students in grades 2 through 12 begins Monday, June 21, and contin ues through Aug. 6 at four locations across Brunswick County. "Jump Start," offered by the Brunswick County Schools Jobs Partnership Training Act (JTPA) program aims to do just that: to give students a head start when school begins this fall by helping them re tain over the summer the knowledge and skills they have been taught. The Brunswick County Summer Youth Jump Start Program offers four hours of free tutoring in reading and math Mon. through Thurs., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Shallotte Middle, South Brunswick Middle, Bolivia Elementary and Lincoln Primary schools. Students must make a commit ment to complete the seven-week program and families must arrange their own transportation. Lunch will not be available, but snacks will be provided. Anyone interested in registering a student at any of the four sistes is asked to contact Anne Mitchell at 754-9282 or 457-5241.
