West Students Attend
Boys/ Girls' State
For the first time in the school's history, stu
dents from West Brunswick High School are at
tending Boys' and Girls' State this week.
Sponsored by the 30-member Shallottc
American Legion Post No. 247, Jarcd Ward is at
tending Boys' State at Wake Forest University in
Winston-Salem and Nicole Norris is attending Tar
Heel Girls' State at UNC-Greensboro.
Ward, 17, is the son of Tommy and Judy Ward
of Ash. Norris, also 17, is the daughter of Winne
and Ralph Norris of Longwood. Both arc rising
seniors at West Brunswick.
Boys' State is sponsored by the American

tense workshop concentrates on North Carolina
state government, the political process and citi

youth citizenship training projcct in North
Carolina state government sponsored by the
American Legion Auxiliary Department of North
Carolina. Both programs provide rising seniors an
opportunity to study democracy, citizenship and
state government with a "hands-on" approach.
Attendees form their own mock government, run
ning for office, holding elections and serving as
public officials.
Both Ward and Norris said they were excited
about the opportunity to learn about government
through the Icam-by-doing programs. Ward said
he hoped to get elected to office.
Two outstanding students from each state pro
gram will be choscn to participate in similar na
tional-level programs.
Ward and Norris plan to share their experi
ences with the Legion post on their return and arc
available to speak to other community organiza
tions as well. To arrange a program, contact their
guidance counselor, Judy Harris, at West
Brunswick High School, 754-4338.
"If we had a greater number of members, we
could provide more services of this kind to our
community," said Post No. 247 Commander Ro
zcll Hewctt. The organization is open to any hon
orably discharged veteran of United Stales mili
tary service.
