SPORTING SCENF Leland's Boys Of Summer Looking Like Contenders Before the American Legion baseball season started a couple of weeks ago, Brunswick County Post 68 Coach Ed Lewis said it would be hard to replace two stars who virtually car ried the club last summer. Chris McBridc and Ed Lewis Jr. "aged out" of American Legion base ball after the 1992 season, when Post 68 finished second in the Area II Eastern League and advanced to the league championship playoff scries. Somehow, Coach has filled the huge shoes of McBridc and Lewis, both of whom play college baseball on the Division I level. Coach has poured his whole team into those shoes, and the team has responded. The 1993 Brunswick County club doesn't have the superstars like McBridc and Lewis. Post 68 has a cast of solid baseball players, and Coach Lewis is discovering a new hero every night. This concoction of North Brunswick and East Cclumbus players with a dash of New Hanover County kids is cooking just as well as last year. As a result, Post 68 should contend for the league title again. If you go to one of Post 68's home games this year, make sure you pick up a program. On the cover is a photo of eight players dressed as outlaws. "Diey're wearing cowboy hats and toting rifles. Pictured arc four brother combinations who have played or are currently playing for the team. They are Paul and Matt Mintz, Mike and Robert Hewett, Chris and Casey McBridc, and Ed and J Lewis. Demetrius Bell, outfielder and leadoff man for Post 68, accomplished something great during his senior season for the North Brunswick Scorpions that went unnoticed at the time. In the championship game of the Scashcll Invitational Tournament, Bell took the mound against New Hanover and struck out Trot Nixon. If I re member correctly, the count was full and Bell got Nixon to wave at a dirt ball. Nixon, the seventh pick overall in the recent Major League Baseball draft, struck out just twice this year while hitting over .500 and setting state single-season record for RBI. If Trot ever makes it big in the pros, which he likely will, Demetrius will always have that strike out to remember. Football Season Nears It's hard to believe with graduation just a week behind us, but high school football practice opens in less than seven weeks. West Brunswick, coming off its first state championship season ever, should be strong again this year with more than half of its starters returning on offense and defense. Coach Jim Brett's Trojans and the South Brunswick Cougars will be part of the new Waccamaw 2A-3A Conference that opens play this fall. West, South and Pender are the league's three 3A schools. Whiteville, West Columbus, East Columbus and South Columbus will compete on the 2A level. It should be an exciting fall with the Trojans trying to return to Chapel Hill for a third straight year and the four Cclumbus County schools knock ing heads in the same conference. Unlike the last two seasons. West and South will meet just once this fall on the gridiron. The county rivals played twice in 1991 and 1992, with West winning all four. The Trojans outscored the Cougars 104-13 in those games. West Brunswick and South Brunswick will play each other, but won't play North Brunswick this year. The Scorpions are "playing down" to the 1A level and have joined the Southern 1A-2A Conference. After dropping varsity football last fall, the Scorps will try to gel the pro gram cranked up this fall under Coach Gary Baldwin. It won't be easy with the likes of East Bladen and St. Pauls in the conference, but we'll see. Mt.
