Carpet Grass Can Be Controlled Dear Plant Doctor I have a bermuda grass lawn. There arc sev eral weeds in the yard hut the worst by far is the grass I have enclosed. Please identify the grass and tell me what I can do to kill it without hurt ing my bermuda grass. Thanks. Answer: The grass you enclosed is called carpet grass (Axonopus affinis). Carpet grass favors sites that have wet, infertile, acidic soils. In a properly limed and amended soil, carpet grass would not be able to compete with the highly vigorous bermuda grass. Carpet grass can be controlled by using several methods. 1. Take a soil sample and have it tested by the North Carolina Co operative Extension Service. Amend your soil to the recommended pH and soil fertility levels for bermuda grass. The carpet grass population will gradually decrease over the next two to three years as bermuda grass is managed for optimum growth. 2. Spot treat with RoundUp or similar hcrbicidc that is approved for lawn use. Use a wick- or spot type applicator to treat just the unde sirable weeds (including carpet grass) in your lawn. Remember, the active ingredient in RoundUp will kill anything it touches, so be very careful in applying the product. 3. Most grassy weeds can be killed in a bermuda grass lawn with Ortho Crabgrass Killer or any simi lar product containing the arsenical herbicides MSMA. MAMA or DS MA. Two applications, seven to 10 THE PLANT DOCTOR C. BRUCE WILLIAMS Extension Area Turf Specialist days apart, arc usually required for total control of all grassy weeds. Follow all label directions and pre cautions. Please note thai methods two and three will not be a permanent solu tion unless the soil pH and fertility are changcd. I am sending you a publication recently authored by Bill Lewis, Ph.D.. titled "Weed Control in Lawns and Other Turf Areas" that will help you decide the best route to control weed problems. Dear Plant Doctor: A friend of mine has a kiwi fruit plant in his backyard and it is loaded with kiwis. He has told me I can get stem cut tings for rooting. How should I go about rooting kiwis? Answer: Kiwifruit or Chinese Gooseberry (Actimdia deliciosa) can be propagated by graftage, budding, stem or root cuttings. Kiwi is dioe cious. This means that male and fe male plants are separate and in order to have fruit produced both sexes must be present and healthy. Remember to take cutting and plant individuals of both sexes. A com mon practice is to plant three to five female plants to every one male plant. Stem or root cutting will be the easiest way for you to get started propagating kiwis. Leafy stem cuttings from the cur rent year's growth can be taken dur ing the summer and rooted under mist in a coarse mixture of vcrmi culite. The lower end of each cutting should be treated with a rooting hor mone that contains IBA (Indole butyrie acid) and a contact fungicide to prevent rot. Rooting will occur in four to six weeks. Root cuttings should made from large healthy roots (pencil-sized) with a length from 2 to 6 inches. Bundle roots and store in damp sand for two to four weeks in a refrigera tor (40F). Cover with plastic wrap and do not allow roots to dry out. After this cold treatment, place root cuttings 2 to 3 inches apart in a ster ile prepared nursery soil with the top of the roots level with the top of the soil. Expose cutting to six to eight hours of diffused light and keep soil moist. Adventitious shoots and a new root system should develop in three to six weeks. Good luck and send me some ki wifruit.
