Jan Loflin of Brierwood shot
gross 75 to win the first flight in the
Brierwood Ladies Invitational last
Friday.
On a match of cards, Nancy
Metzger of Topsail shot 77 to edge
Darleen Joyner of Echo Farms for
second place.
Henriette Raff of Sea Gull had the
first flight's low net score of 62.

ond place after both women shot net

In the second (light. Fileen Fox of
Surf led the field with gross 80. She
was followed hy Fran Bogart of Bay
Tree with 81 and Pat Reid of Sea
Trail with 83.
On a match of cards. Sue Greiner
of Carolina Shores edged Jody Cole
of Fox Squirrel for low net honors
with 62. Paula Kalweit shot net 64
to finish third.
Norma Stolpa of Topsail fired
gross 90 to led the third flight.
Runners-up were Bobbie Davis of
Fox Squirrel with 91 and Shirley
Groff of Brierwood with 92.
Low net winners were determined
on a match of cards after three
women shot 62. Brierwood's Joan
Cowie placed first, followed by Ele
anor Weider of Bay Tree and Gay
Morris of Oak Island.
Davis had the longest drive at the
11th hole. Closest-to-the-pin win
ners were Davis at the third hole.
Stolpa at the ninth. Robin Walters of
Sea Trail at the 14th and Bobbie
Maples of Brierwood at the 17th.
In Brierwood Ladies Golf Associ
ation play last Thursday. Helene
Baker shot net 23.5 to win the first
(light in the crossover tournament.
Runners-up in the top flight in
cluded Rose Reiter with net 24 and
Joyce Thompson with 24.5. Reiter
and Maureen Farley tied for low
putts with 27 each.
In the second flight, low scorers
were Esther Smith with 23 and
Audrey Salmon with 23.5. Alice
Micali and Mary Ahearn lied for
third with rounds of 26. Smith.
Ahearn. Marian Johnson and Peg
Steiner lied for low putts with 30.
Leading the third night was
Marion Rockstroh with net 26.
Louise Blizzard shot 27. and Mary
Nicol and Marion Corbin tied for
third at 27.5. Rockstroh had low
putts with 29, followed by Jenny
Ward with 31.
Micali birdied the eighth hole and
chipped in at the 11 th. Rockstroh
had a chip-in at the fifth and a birdie
at the eighth.
Also making birdies were Peg
Sawyer at the eighth and Farley at
the 14th. Carding chip-ins were
Ruth Linder at the third and 14th,
Nel Justice at the sixth. Smith at the
11 th and Johnson at the 18th.
Sea Trail Men
John Murphy and Low Meyers
tied for first place in the Sea Trail
Men's Golf Association flag tourna
ment last Tuesday on the Byrd
course. Both men completed 20
holes.
Ken Harris was third, followed by
Marv Peters, Keith Curry and Sid
Roberson. Boh Moore, Joe Carpin
ello. Herb Gardner and Ron Schadle
tied for seventh. Other top finishers
were Jim Jones, Ray Washam and
Wayne Ruff.
Closest-to-the-pin winners were
John Pointer at the second hole.
Gerry Nappy at the seventh, Murphy
at the 12th and Ray Dillon and Herb
Holman at the 16th.
Brierwood Ninettes
Pat Nara/inski. Judy Durham and
Carol Soucie were the top three fin
ishers in the Brierwood Ninettes
tournament last Friday.
Golfers counted scores on their
five best holes. Durham and Nara
zinski tied with low putts, and June
Cleasby and Julie McCall tied for
second.

Niners
The Carolina Shores Nifty Niners
competed for low gross and low net
last Saturday at Ocean Isle Beach
and Brierwood golf courses.
Top finishers at Ocean Isle in
cluded Kathleen Brennan with gross
58. Nancy Rubin with 60 and Peggy
Goode with 60.
Rubin had the low net with 25.
Ginny Bingham was second with
31. followed by GotnJe with 32.
Low gross winners at Brierwood
were Ja\e Arlotta with 55. Judy
Redding with 56 and Jane Taubel
with 56.
Redding had the low net with 14.
Jeanne Cardiff shot 23 and Taubel
had a 24. Jenny Gainer had a chip-in
on the 14th hole at Ocean Isle.
Calabash Veterans
Jerry Falvey, Hal Riebesehl. Don
Mahncke and Stan Risch shot 68 to
win the Calabash Veterans Golf
Association captain's choice event
last Friday at Carolina Shores.
Finishing one shot back in second
place was the foursome of Ray
Shannon. Charlie Weber. Bob
Greenwood and Frank Bchuniak.
Pat Varney. Bob Stilwell. Harry
Knowles and Mo Mosher placed
third with a round of 71.
The Calabash Veterans will play
this Friday at Azalea Sands. Tee
time is 7:30 a.m.
Carolina Shores Ladies
Ruth Radcliffe won the Carolina
Shores Ladies Golf Association Flag
Day Tournament last Thursday.
Radcliffe finished in the second fair
way.
Other top finishers were Ann
Hierman. who finished 12 inches
from the first hole, and Dottie
Russo. who was five feet from the
cup at number one. May Robertson
also finished on the first green and
placed fourth.
Rounding out the top 12 places
were Alice Abbene. Betty Kibble
house. Jackie Distler. Flo String,
Carolyn D'Avanzo. Sue Greiner.
Gloria Lucas and Ginnie Derrick
son.
Hierman had low putts for the day
with 29. She also chipped in for
birdie at the 12th hole and birdied
the 10th. Distler chipped in for
birdie at the eighth and chipped in at
the 13th.
Also making chip-ins were Joan
McNamara at the fifth. Elaine Had
dock at the 12th and Ginny Dorshi
mer at the 13th.
Carding birdies were Jean Krisher
at the third; Irene Crane, Dottie
Meader and Joan O'Neill at the

Myrtle Beach. S.C., for their June
tournament.
Using a point quota format, first
place went to the team of Marje

Rose Reiter. Toni lossi. Pierrette
Tompkins and Marian Rockstroh
placed second, followed by the team
of Hilda Hall, Dot Crean and Lou

captain's choice event. Jerry Pratt,
George Cleasby. Alice Micali and
Louise Blizzard shot 33 to tie the
foursome of John Twomey. Andy
Micali, Marje Roach and Ruth
Crosby.
In other action last Thursday, the
team of Neal McCall. Joe Reiter.
Bill Goldsberry and Paul Keelev
shot 30 under par to win a best ball
event. Teams counted the two best
balls per hole. All four balls counted
on the ninth.
On June 14, the Brierwood men
competed in a best ball event. Teams
counted one ball on the first five
holes, two balls on the next five,
three balls on the next four and four
balls on the last four.
Dave Harper, Jim Crosby, Jack
Akers and Charlie Stransky finished
first with a 23-under-par score of
149.
Placing second at 20 under par
was the team of Neal McCall, A1
Butler and Jerry Smith. They used a
blind draw for their fourth score.

finished third with a round of 157.
In the June 10 mixed scramble,
two teams tied for first with scores
of 34. Jim Roach. Jim Bryant. Alice

Athan. Irene Bryant and Ruth
Crosby.
Sea Trail Ladies
Ann Holinan had 30 putts to lead
the first tlight in the Sea Trail Ladies
Golf Association low putts tourna
ment last Wednesday on the Byrd
course. Heni Moulton was second in
the top flight with 32 putts.
Top finishers in the second flight
were Nancy Williams with 29 putts
and Jill Wilson and Martha Murphy
with 32 each.
In ihe third (light. Marge Stokes.
Phyllis Manfred and Lois Pike tied
for first with 32 putts apiece. Marge
Gallop and Ruth Kivett tied lor first
in the fourth (light with 36 putts.
Closest-to-the-pin winners were
Phyllis Manfred at the seventh hole
and Jan Rick at the 16th. Robin
Walters had an eagle at the 15th
hole.
On June 12. the team of JoAnn
Van Dusen, Norma Tschupp, Pat
Buikart and Jackie Toole shot 71 to
win the Sea Trail Ladies captain's
choice tournament on the Byrd
course.
On a match of cards, second place
went to Rosemary Walker. Mildred
Wegmann. Flo Ruff and Wendy Ruff
Sorcie with a round of 73.
Finishing third, also with 73. was
the foursome of Adele Stephens.
Francis Williams. Mary Morris and
Betty Dawley.
On June 9. Nancy Williams
birdied the 13th hole and shot net 33
to lead the first (light in the Sea Trail
Ladies nine-hole tournament.
Runners-up in the top (light were
Heni Moulton with 34, Martha
Murphy with 35 and Carolyn Graves
with 36.
In the second flight, top finishers
were Betty Street with net 32. Elaine
Lawrenson with 33. Jane Bye with
34 and Carolyn Young with 35.
Marge Gallop led (he third flight
with a 34. Carol Peters was second
with 37, and Marge Bach placed
third with 39.
Ruth's Renegades
Doris Brooke shot 29.5 to win the
Ruth's Renegades tournament last
week at Eagles Nest Golf Cluh.
Golfers counted scores on even
numbered holes only and used hall
of their handicaps.
Runners-up were Rulh Brown
with net 31 and Ruth Bealty with
34. Brooke had the overall low gross
of 112 and low net of 73.
On June 12, Ruth's Renegades
hosted a mixed couples event at The
Pearl Golf Links. Teams counted
one best ball on the first six holes,
two balls on the next six and three
halls on the last six.

placed first with a score of 123.

Paula Kalweit placed first in the
Fox Squirrel Women's Golf Assoc

nual Spring Fling Tournament. Kal

tied for second.
Judy Collins recorded three
birdies in May. Also making birdies

Tourney Set
For Aug. 21
The Ladies Auxiliary of the
Calabash Klks Lodge will sponsor a
ladies' golf tournament August 21
beginning with a shotgun start at 9
a.m.
The tournament will be held at
SeaTrail Plantation in Sunset Beach.
Lunch and awards will be presented
at the lodge at the finish.
Players will be charged a contri
bution of $35. which will go toward
nursing scholarships for Brunswick
County nursing students.

nament to be held later this summer
at Bay Tree Plantation.

fold fired a net 50 to win Division II
in the American Cancer Society
Tournament June 15 at River Hills.
By winning that local event, the
team qualified for the state tourna
