Fellowship To Hear Broken Oliver Friday
A man who changed his legal
name after his baptism will share his
testimony at the May banquet meet
ing of the Brunswick County Chap
ter, Full Gospel Business Men's
Fellowship International.
The dinner meeting will be held
Friday, July 9, at 7 p.m., at Family
House Restaurant, Main Street,
Shalloltc.
Speaker Broken Oliver has been
pastor of Open Door Baptist Church
in Morehead City since 1985. He is
chairman of Carteret County Home
Educators, president of the Carteret
County Min sterial Association, a
member of the board of directors for
Morehead City's Full Gospel chap
ter, and a Women's Aglow advisor.
Oliver has also recorded two al
bums of sacred music, traveled
widely in ministry, served as pastor
or minister of music in various
churches, and taught English,
speech, journalism and Bible at vari
ous schools. He is a former Chris
tian school administrator. His most
recently-earned degree is a master's
in Biblical studies from Regent Uni
versity, Virginia Beach, Va.
He will be joined at the meeting
by his wife, Karen, and five children
in leading praise and worship and
providing special music.
Carnival Opens VBS
A carnival Saturday, July 10,
from 9 a.m. until noon will open
Vacation Bible School (VBS) at
Ocean View Baptist Church near
Ocean Isle Beach.
The event will feature games,
prizes, free food, contests and a spe
cial appearance by Duane Williams,
cr "Pug," a professional clown.
VBS will continue July 12-16
from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., offering wor
ship, Bible study, crafts, refresh
ments and recreation.
The program is open to youths

C.R.O.P. Walk Is Topic
Plans for a fall C.R.O.P. walk to
raise funds to alleviate hunger are on
the agenda when the South Bruns
wick Interchurch Council meets
Monday, July 12, at 8:30 a.m. at
Joe's Barbecue.
One of about 80 such events held
annually across North Carolina, the
walk will raise funds for local and
international hunger projects under
the auspices of Church World Ser
vices.
The first local walk in 1991 raised
more than 54,000, of which one
fourth was kept locally for the
Council's Food Bank to help meet
local hunger needs, said Eggert.
The Council is meeting one week
later than usual in July, due to the
Independence Day holiday.

will be guest speaker for the July
meeting of the Shallotte Women's
Aglow Fellowship.
She trained at Evangelism Explo

ale, Fla., through a 16- week pro
gram. After her training, she was
certified to teach others evangelism.
She and her husband Dick are mem
bers of the Myrtle Grove Presby
terian Church in Wilmington.

"We're trying to preserve the old
fashioned way of worship," said Os
borne.
Participants will come from across
the Southeast, camping at the site
during the event. Osborne said the
ministry group plans to hold three
camp meetings a year at the site.
The camp meeting is free and
open to local residents.

Oleta Bcnnctl Norris, 83, of Ash,
died June 29 in Cape Fear Memorial
Hospital, Wilmington.
The funeral was July 1 in the
Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel,
Shallotte, with the Rev. Tracie Var
num officiating. Burial was in Ben
nett Cemetery, Ash.
Born Oct. 1, 1909, in Ash, Mrs.
Norris was a daughter of the late
Benjamin and Maggie Hickman
Bennett.
Survivors include her husband of
64 years, Leon Norris; a daughter.
Norma "Nan" Thomas of Ash; two
sons. Leon Cameron Norris Jr. and
Gene Bennett Norris, both of
Shallotte; a sister, Hattie Belle Smith
of Lcland; three brothers, Martin
Bennett of Jacksonville, Fla., Cur

Bennett of Shallotte; seven grand
children; and 12 great-grandchil
