Literacy Program Offers An Incentive For Families Southeastern Community College is offering an adult literacy program with a family twist. An incentive is available to fami lies with college-age children in which one or both parents did not graduate from high school. "Parents Without Diplomas" will provide a SI, 000 grant to a child to pursue the SCC curriculum program of his or her choice when the parent enrolls in free Adult Basic Education, Adult High School or GED classes at SCC. As long as the parent is attending and showing progress in an adult lit eracy program, the child receives a minimum of 51,000 in financial aid grants per year for up to two acade mic years. Parent and student must attend school at the same time, said Selena Rowell, public information assistant, although if the parent receives a high school diploma or GED, the student will continue to receive the grant until he or she graduates from a one- or two-year program. Grants are disbursed on a quarter ly basis and the student is required to maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average. "Parents Without Diplomas" is funded by grants from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation along with state, federal and local financial aid. For more information, contact James Fowler, director of counsel ing, admissions and records, at 1 919-642-7141. Coatcs, with Bradley's help, se lected and began a research project which can be continued at South Brunswick High. They are one of 15 student tcachcr pairs from across the state participating in the Student Science Projects Workshop. The two-week program is sponsored by the state school as part of its Rural Scicnce Initiative. Bradley had arrived on campus a week earlier to review and learn lab oratory skills, investigative strate gies and data analysis. In addition to instruction and fa cilities, the workshop grant provides SI, 000 to be used for supplies, books, travel and/or establishing a network. Teams that participate in this summer's program will have an opportunity to return to Durham to participate in a symposium of their students' research. Steve Warshaw, head of science at NCSSM, said the goal of the project is to establish a network of rural and NCSSM teachers collaborating to improve science teaching across the state. The program is funded by a grant from the Kathleen Price and Joseph M. Bryan Family Foundation.
