PEOPLE iN THE NEWS White, Borfield Attend CASAS Conference Aniia White and Sabra Barficld of Brunswick Community College's literacy program were among 400 participants in the 1993 National CASAS Summer Institute in San Diego. The assembly discussed using test results to target instruction, employ ability competency systems, staff development and family literacy, among other topics. CASAS is the acronym for Com prehensive Adult Student Assess ment System, an approach that em phasizes use of practical or life skills in both assessing a student's skills and in determining competency in a given subject area. BCC literacy instructors use CASAS mctnods in all classcs: adult basic education (ABE), general edu cation development (GED or high school equivalency) and English as a second language (ESL) programs. CASAS training is offered on a quarterly basis at BCC. Interested persons can contact Barficld, CAS AS coordinator, or White, slate CASAS trainer and Brunswick Interagency Director, at 754-6900, 457-6329, or 343-0203. New Master Sergeant Lesley N. Ellis has been promot ed in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of master sergeant. He is stationed at RAF Upper Heyford, Oxford, Eng land. The sergeant, an air traffic control technician, is the son of Violet L. and Raymond Jester of Shallotte. In 1974, he graduated from Northeast Guilford High School, McLeansvillc, and received an asso ciate degree in 1993 from the Uni versity of Maryland through the ex tension in England. Wabash Dean's List Adam M. Kirtlcy of Shallotte is on the dean's list for the spring se mester at Wabash College, Craw fordsville, lnd. Kirtlcy, a sophomore, is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel Kirtlcy of Queen's Grant Circle. He is one of 205 dean's list students who main tained a 3.5 grade point average or better on a 4.0 scale. Wabash is a liberal arts school for men. Stationed In San Diego Navy Lt Peter M. Mantz, son of Lois F. MacDonald of Calat^sh, re cently reported for duty with Hcli cop'er Combat Support Squadron 3, Navai Air Station North Island, San Dic^o. Tie 1986 graduate of Nanscmond Sufljlk Academy of Suffolk, Va., joined the Navy in May 1990. Mantz. is a 1990 graduate of Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va., with a B.A. degree. Reaves At Retreat W. Michael Reaves, president of Brunswick Community College, is one of 50 presidents participating in the American Association of Com munity Colleges Presidents Aca demy Summer Experience this week. During the four-day retreat in Breckenridge, Colo., the presidents are discussing new and emerging is sues and challenges in community colleges, exchanging ideas and stra tegies, networking and attending leadership workshops. CLUB BRIEFS Beachcombers To Meet The Bcachcombcrs Extension Homcmakcrs Club will meet Wed nesday, July 14, at 10 a.m. at the Bonaparte Retreat clubhouse. Newcomers Club Bow/ Tonight The Newcomers Club of South Brunswick is sponsoring a special outing today at 7 p.m. the Bruns wick County Bowling Center on N.C. 179 in Shallotte. New Al-Anon Group A new Al-Anon Family Group has organized for individuals whose lives are effected by a family or houesehold member who has a prob lem with alcohol. Meetings Suspended The Stroke Support Group of Grand Strand General Hospital has suspended its meetings during July and August.
