SENIOR ACTIVITIES Bowling Classic Next Friday Brunswick County Parks and Re creation will hold its first Whipper Snappcr Classic Bowling Day next Friday, July 16, at Brunswick County Bowling Center in Shallotte. Area senior citizens are invited to bring their child, grandchild or an other youngster with them to the bowling alley as part of the recre ation department's family summer scries. Bowling will begin at 1 p.m. and end at 3 p.m. The cost is SI per per son. Shoes will cost extra. Bowlers should call the parks and recreation department in advance at 253-4357 or 1-800-222-4790. On July 22, the family summer series continues with an offshore fishing trip for senior citizens and kids age 13 and over. The trip will be limited to 30 people. The 8-hour trip aboard the Mega Fliie out of Holden Beach will cost S30 per person, which must be paid in advance. There will be no refunds after July 15. Call the recreation de partment for details. Golf Tournament The Gaundet at St. James Plan tation will host the Senior Games Golf Tournament on Tuesday, July 27. The S20 entry fee includes green and carts fees, lunch and prizes. For information, call Kay Brannon at 919-278-9409. Shuffleboard Clubs Brunswick County's senior shuf fleboard clubs continue to meet weekly at four locations across the county. Play begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 1 1 a.m. Seniors meet every Monday at Lcland Park, Tuesday at Town Creek Park, Wednesday at Stevens Park in Southport and Thursday at the Shallouc Senior Center. Mature Movement Mature Movement, an exercise class for seniors, meets every Thurs day from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. at the Lockwood Folly Community Build ing in Supply. The class also meets each Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Long Beach Recreation Center and every Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Southport Recreation Center. Robinson Rolls 244 High Game Jimmy Robinson rolled a 244 high game to lead the men in the Woodmen of the World League last Friday night at Brunswick County Bowling Center in Shallotte. Robinson finished with a 641 scratch series, three pins behind Tom Haley and Waddell Evans with 644 series. Haley had a 230 high game, while Evans rolled a 220. Other top scorers among the men included Mike Hardee with a 216 game and 62 1 series; Michael Russ, 212, 450; Mike Clardy, 207, 599; and David Sabiston, 205, 489. Pam Clardy led the women bowl ers Friday night with a 234 high game and 561 scratch series. Closesi-to-lhe-pin winners includ ed Jackic Distlcr of Carolina Shores at the eighth hole. Lavem Stephens of Wilmington Municipal had a hole in one at the 109-yard third hole. She used a 7 iron. Ruth's Renegades Members of Ruth's Renegades golf group counted scores on even numbered holes only in their tourna ment last Thursday. At Eagles Nest, Rulh Brown led the field wiih a score of net 30. Runncrs-up were Jean Caiazzo with 32 and Teddy Altrculer with 34. Caiazzo had the overall low gross of 111 and low net of 71. Doris Pearce birdicd the seventh hole, and Doris Brooke chipped in at the eighth. At Bricrwood, Marion Corbin placed first with a score of 35.5. Other top finishers included Ruth Jacobs with 36.5 and Jen Ward with 37.5. Peg Steiner had the overall low gross with 102, while Corbin had the low net of 67. Alice Struck chipped in for birdie at the 10th hole. Brierwood Men Two teams tied for first place in the Brierwood Men's Golf Asso ciation nine-hole mixed scramble last Thursday. Roy Havcnga, George Cleasby, John Twomey and Margaret Wood shot 32 to tie the foursome of Jim Bryant, Andy Micali, Bobbie Map les and Martha Warcheim. In other play last Thursday, the team of Bill Pingo, Jerry Lula, Jack Causer and Bob Allwein shot 12 un der par to win a lowest net ball event at Brierwood. Finishing 1 1 shots back in second place was the team of Ncal McCall, Jim Henncscy, Jerry Smith and Dick Anzclone. On June 28, the foursome of Ncal McCall, Bill Allen, Bob Sterner and Bob Allwein shot 7-under-par 135 to win a team event. Groups counted the high net ball and low net ball on each hole. Carolina Shores Ladies Betty Kibblchousc shot net 29 to win the first flight in the Carolina Shores Ladies Golf Association tournament last Thursday. Sea Trail Couples Jim Jones, Dale Stanton, Betty Geesey and Sylvia Has on shot 67 to win the Sea Trail Couples cap tain's choice event June 27 on the Byrd course. Finishing second on a match of cards was the foursome of John Williams, Bill Kimball, Nancy Williams and Marie Blanda, also with 67. Three teams finished with scores of 69, and the order of finish was determined on a card match. Taking third was the team of Ed Bye, Jack Mosey, Barbara Pointer and Maggie Crockett. John Pointer, Dutch Geesey, Phyllis Manfred and Betty Dawley were fourth. Placing fifth was the team of Joe Hasson, A1 Consalvi, Carol Patfidge and Janet Coniglio. Brierwood Ladies Doris Dunfee and Peg Sawyer both scorcd net 26 to tie for first placc in the first (light of the Brier wood Ladies Golf Association tour nament last Tuesday. Golfers counted even-numbered holes on the front nine and odd numbered holes on the back. Run ners-up in the top flight were Marie Dolan with 26.5 and Joanna Lang with 27. Lang had low putts in the flight with 26. In the second flight, Ruth Lindcr led the way with a score of 23.5. Bobbye Cordisco was second with 26.5, followed by Shirley Graff and Marion Johnson with rounds of 27. Graff had low pulls. Top finishers in the third flight in cluded Emily Laughlin with 24.5 and Jean Lacerenza with net 25. Tied for third with scores of 26.5 were Audrey Salmon and Alice Micali. Peg Steiner had low putts with 27. Marion Corbin won the fourth flight with a round of 25.5. Runners up were Toni Kobos with 28.5 and Lou Culp and Louise Blizzard with scores of 29. Corbin had low putts with 28. Chipping in for birdies were Hclene Baker at the sixth hole, Irene Bryant at the 10th and Ethel Brown at the 11th. Also carding birdies were Nancy Bouldin at the second, 16th and 17th holes; Lang and Sawyer at the sev enth; and Margaret Wood at the third and 14th. Carolina Shores Men Les Meadcr, Tom Harris, Frank MatLson and Chuck Radcliffe shot 124 to win the Carolina Shores Men's Golf Association tournament June 26. Teams counted one low net on par fives, two low nets on par fours, three on par threes and all four balls on the 1 8th hole. Finishing sccond with net 128 was the foursome of John Schwab, Don Rose, Mike Slachowiak and Bob Fyock. Gary Mott, John Deming, John Ter/.o and Joe Vulpis took third with 132. Closest-to-thc-pin winners were Dan Roberts at the third hole, Radcliffe at the eighth, Slachowiak at the 12th and Hank Hettinger at the 16th. Sea Trail Men Howard Van Duscn shot net 61 to win the Sea Trail Men's Golf Association tournament last Tuesday on the Jones course. Runncrs-up included Don Lowry with a round of 62 and Stan Risch with a 65. Tied for fourth place with scores of 66 were Herb Holman, Jim Jones and Bill Morris. Ron Schadle and Wayne Ruff both shot 67. Finishing with 68 were Joe Hasson, Charlie Ferguson, Bob Moore and Bud Tunt. Closest-to-thc-pin winners includ ed Bcmic Swanckamp at the sccond hole, Holman at the fifth, Tom Coniglio at the 13th and John Ewart at the 17th. Sharing low gross honors were Marv Peters and Sid Roberson with scores of 79. Brierwood Ninettes Joyce Rose shot net 24 to win the Brierwood Ninettes golf tournament last week. Golfers dropped scores on their two worst holes. Runncrs-up included Liz Bruce with net 25 and Pat Nara/inski with 26. Bruce parred the fifth and eighth holes. Rose and Julie McCall made par at the third. Ann Poison had low putts, fol lowed by Marion Allen. Bruce, Rose and Alene Sterner tied for third. Lockwood Shootout Jim Campana and Bill Mulligan had W'A points to win the weekly Shootout last Wednesday at Lockwood Golf Links. Finishing second with 9'A points were Steve Free and Rudy Normandin. Fred Kellog and Cane Faircloth took third with 6 points. The top finisher on a non-winning team was Bill Schmidt with 6K points. Calabash Veterans Walt Bcncs, A1 Branham. Lew Meyer and Bill McDavit won the Calabash Veterans Golf Association tournament last Friday at Sandpiper Bay. The winners shot 260 in the total net of foursome event. Finishing second with 261 was the team of Wash Dayton, Bill Reese, Randy Spooncr and Merle Risher. Bob Christian, Larry Bollinger, Don Critz and Harry Russell shot 262 to place third.
