HF 'Little Dell' Takes First In Jolly Mon Classic BY JAMIE MII.LIKKN The 1992 second annual Jolly Mon King Classic is in the record books. Seventy-five anglers converged upon Sharky's Pizza Friday afternoon for the captains' meeting. The field of contestants was greeted Saturday morning by a 15 milc-an hour southwest wind that had built the seas to a good three feet. Anticipation r adtaim was runnm? as 10 lhc number M CAPTAIN of 30-pound kings that were constantly -jl JAMIE'S being brouuht in for state citations the Z1 OFFSHORE cnlirRcI"ckw? , (T ? Bpf cicuim/* Bobby Wilkes teamed up with Tom \ FISHING Tucker aboard Tom's boat, the Double REPORT '? 1? 'and a 30-poundcr on Thursday. Wednesday, a group from Lexington (and faithful followers of the Beacon), led by Capl. Robbie Miscnheimer aboard the Reel Bent, landed a 33-pound king while trolling dead bail 18 miles offshore. There were numerous 25-pound kings landed during the week as well. The first king brought to the scales at 2 p.m. Saturday was a nice one. Capt. Bill Tripp and Mike Potts captured a 20.10-poundcr and placed them selves solidly upon the leader board. They were followed by Capt. Brad Markham and the crew of the Plenty Moore as they brought to the docks a beauty ? 29 pounds? placing them in the lead. At 4:45, a line of boats patiently made its way to Sharky's docks. There was a constant line of nice 20-pound-plus kings being offloaded. The com petition was close. DeCarol Williamson, fishing his boat, the Little Dell, teamed with Curt Pritchard to land the largest king. Their catch weighed 32.50 pounds and moved into the lead. Steve Stirwalt, wife Kerin and angler Monte gave the top two a run for their money with a king weighing 28 pounds. But the Little Dell held on to win. The competition was close throughout the first top six fish. Two boats ? Taylor Made, crcwcd by Capl. Ron Taylor and A1 Fulford ? tied for fourth place. The crew of the Sandfiddler, captained by John Sullivan and his father Victor, matched each others' weight of 26.88 pounds. Everyone knew that defending champion Phil Brinsficld and Jimmy Suggs would again be tough to beat, and no one was wrong. Phil and Jimmy's combined three fish totaled enough to capture the tournament's prestigious aggregate prize, the Ed Jones Award. I can speak from experience; there wasn't a dry eye in the crowd as Eddie Jones presented the trophy. Ed, you touched us all. The awards ended with a great old-fashioned pig-pickin'. Jimmy Buffctt and John Mcllcncamp provided the music, and once everyone grew tired of them, we put in another tape. It was great! ? ? ? I'll try to catch you up with the Gulf Stream stories next week. 1 also have this wish for all the local anglers who loaded up Monday and departed for the largest king mackerel tournament in the world ? the Greater Jacksonville King Mackerel Tournament in Florida: Go Gct-'Em-Homc, Boys! That's it for now. Good fishin' and good luck, "Jolly Mon!" TAYLOR % - *7 PHOTO CONTRIBUTED FOURTH PLACE WINNERS were (from left) Al Fulford, Kirby Bryan and Ron Taylor.
