Her photograph and biography will appear in the academy's year book. A rising ninth grade student at P.R. Harris Edu cation Center in Washington , a U.S. National mathematics by HARDY " ' D.C., she is the daughter of Betty Jcnrette Hardy of Washington, D.C., and the late Will Roger Hardy. She is the granddaughter of David Jen rctte of Shallouc. Shauntayc is one of the less than 10 percent of all American high school students to be honored by the acadcmy. She was nominated by her math teacher on the basis of criteria that includc academic performance, enthusiasm and motivation. Lewis Recognized Patricia M. (Patti) Lewis has been recognized for academic achi evement as a United States National Honor Roll Award winner. Her bi ography and photograph will appear in the yearbook of the United States Achievement Academy. A rising eighth grade student at Shallotte Middle School, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lewis. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Pal Tolson of Shallotte and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Agcc of Supply. LEWIS A member of Girl Seoul Troop 522, she has earned 88 badges in six years and is working on her silver award and religious recognition for Cadctte. She is a member of Supply Baptist Church. Assumes Command Col. George L. Cajigal assumed command of the Wilmington Dis trict, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, from Col. Walter Scott Tulloch II in a ceremony Tuesday. Cajigal, a 1968 graduate of Wes tern Carolina University, Cullowhec, assumes command after serving as assistant director of civil works for the Atlantic region at the corps' headquarter- in Washington, D.C. Tulloch's next assignment will be as deputy commander of the corps' Lower Mississippi Valley Division at Vicksburg, Miss. Halfway There Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Christopher S. Hilts, son of Donna M. Doling of Lcland, recendy pas sed the midway point in a six-month deployment aboard the aircraft carri er USS Theodore Roosevelt, home ported in Norfolk, Va? as lead ship in its battle group. After more than 100 days at sea, the ship transited the Suez Canal from the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, where Hilts is now partici pating in Operation Southern Watch, enforcing the United Nations-im posed "no-fly" zone over Southern Iraq. While deployed, elements of the battle group have worked with North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies enforcing a no-fly zone over Bosnia-Herzegovina. While operat ing in the Adriatic Sea, some units also participated in Operation Pro vide Promise, providing relief sup plies to war-torn former Yugoslavia. The Roosevelt is a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier that stretches 1,040 feet in length and displaces %,358 tons. It carries a crew and air wing of 5,500 men and 85 aircraft. After spending the first 78 days at Sea, Hilts visited Rhodes, Greece, for a five-day port visit. The 1983 graduate of Herkimer High School of Herkimer, N.Y., joined the Navy in May 1985. It's Sgt. Perkins Joel S. Perkins has been promoted in the U.S. Army to the rank of ser geant. The sergeant, an artillery fire-sup port specialist, is the son of Peggy H. and Cecil A. Ellis of Route 3, Shallottc. He is a 1988 graduate of WEst Brunswick High School. Arrives At Moody Air Force Airman Brian K. Seal cy has arrived for duty at Moody Air R)rtc Base in Valdosta, Ga. Sealey, an apprentice aircraft ar mament systems specialist, is the son of Julia and Dennis L. Sealey of Leland. He is a 1991 graduate of North Brunswick High School, Leland. Places In Contests NaJia Joyncr of Southport won two scholarships with a combined value of $2,500 in a cold dish recipe competition sponsored by Naturally Fresh Corp. July 10 at Six Rags Over Georgia near Atlanta. Joyncr 's "Shrimp Salad Supreme" won him a S500 scholarship as third-place winner in the North Car olina preliminary competition, then S2,000 in competition with 10 other students from southern states that in cluded the Carolinas, Alabama, Florida and Georgia. "All of the people from North Carolina placed in the nationals," he said. "It was just by coincidence." He will use the scholarship mon ey this fall, when he begins classes at the Charleston, S.C., campus of Johnson & Wales. The recipe features fresh toma toes stuffed with a shrimp and rice filling seasoned with peppers, oni ons and thousand island dressing. Bellamy At Institute Anne Marie Bellamy, public in formation officer for Brunswick Community College, is one of 25 participants in the 1993 Community College Leadership Institute. Held July 12-23 in Raleigh, the institute explores the various aspects of leadership, focusing on emerging issues in community college educa tion and community development. Conduct Commended Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Raymond H. Bitney has re ceived the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal. Bitney is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Raymond H. Bitney of Memory Lane, Southport. The medal recognizes the service man's "honest and faithful service during a three-year period," accord ing to a news release. "To earn it, Biuiey achieved and maintained a satisfactory level of performance and an unblemished conduct record for the entire period." He is assigned aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis, home ported in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is a 1973 graduate of Helena Scnio/ High School of Helena, Montana, and a 1983 graduate of Washington Slate University at Pullman with a B.S. degree. Miller was among high school students from across the Southeast taking part in the rccent 1993 Student Introduction to Engineering (SITE) program at N.C. State University. He is the son of Rosemary E. and William B. Miller of Brunswick Place, Lcland. The one-week summer residence program is designed to introduce top-tanked students to the various fields of engineering and, in particu lar, the College of Engineering at NCSU. The program, attended by 140 students, included classes in bi ological and agricultural engineer ing, chemical engineering, civil en gineering, computer scicncc, electri cal and computer engineering, in dustrial engineering, materials sci cncc engineering and nuclear engi neering. Students were chosen on the basis of grade point average, PSAT/SAT test scores or the recommendations of teachers or counselors. Visits Boston Navy Fireman Recruit Dwight C. Robinson recently completed a three-day port visit to Boston aboard the USS Sumter, homcported in Little Creek, Va. Robinson is the son of Richard C. and Sara C. Dobson of Shallottc. Hankins of Southport has been appointed to the Professional Review Commission by Superinten dent of Public Instruction Bob Ethe ridge. She was recommended by Sen. R.C. Soles Jr., deputy president pro tempore of the Senate. A retired high school guidance counselor, Mrs. Hankins is a well known lor her leadership in church, civic and political affairs. Completes Program Adam J. Edwards of Shalloitc re ccnily completed the MarineQuest Marine Science and Environmental Education Program, Coast Trek, at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The program, sponsored by the Division for Public Service at UNCW, offers academically gifted students the opportunity to study the marine life and habitats of coastal southeastern Norih Carolina. Projects included setting up and slocking a salt water aquarium with animals and plants collected during field trips to the ocean, nearby in lets, sounds and marshes.
