Funds Sought To Battle Moths After Discovery In Southport in.u. Agriculture Commissioner Jim Graham is seeking federal mon ey to battle an infestation of gypsy moths discovered earlier this month aboard a cargo ship in Southport. Inspectors found the moths aboard the M.V. Advantage , which docked at Sunny Point Military Ocean Terminal July 4. The ship had just arrived at the terminal following a two-week voyage from Germany. The vessel, owned by the Red River Shipping Co., is under charter to the U.S. Military Scalift Command. The discovery alarmed N.C. Department of Agriculture officials because they noticed the female moth flying, a characteristic which gives the voracious insect a broader range of dispersal. "Flying females provide a means for rapid spread of population and is of critical concern," Graham wrote to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy. Graham said the discover rep resented "a major introduction of a foreign pest into North Carolina and the United Suites." "A comprehensive effort to deter mine the nature and extent of the in festation and a vigorous control pro gram to eliminate the threat are nec essary," Graham said. "Emergency funds for the USDA agencies deal ing with the problem will likely be required." He added that a similar infesttion of the gypsy moth in Washington and Oregon last year required S30 million in federal funds. The gypsy moth feeds on the leaves of trees and shrubbery. If left unchecked, it can defoliate forcsLs. NCDA experts believe the moth could be a new strain of the insect. The European strain of the gypsy moth, whose females are flightless, is already established in sections of j northeastern North Carolina and ' along the eastern United States. Female moths belonging to the Asian strain of the insect can fly. ! -c. 8c Craffs ^ V,^Locos.. ^ ?Over 60 crafters ?Gourmet Fudge ?Sugar-Free Chocolate Er [ ?Miniatures Choco TFve Cltngerbreact House *: DetUjfitfuXty Different Place to Shop i?
