ly, 82, of Charlotte died July 21 in
Avantc of Charlotte Nursing Home.
A graveside service was held July
22 in Sunset Memory Gardens,
Charlotte, by the Rev. Paul Jerrctt.
Born Feb. 24, 1911, in Walker
County, Ga., she was the daughter of
the late Ruben and Laura Stoker
Underwood. She was a homcmakcr
and a member of Archdale Church
of Christ, Charlotte.
She was the widow of Paul L.
Lively, who died Nov. 7, 1991.
Survivors, includc her son, Glenn
Lively of Charlotte and Shady For
est community; two brothers, John
Underwood of Trion, Ga., and Clint
Underwood of Summcrvillc, Ga.;
three sisters, Julie Ann Ledford of
San Francisco, Lucy Chamlec of
Aniston, Ala., and Jewel Shelton of
Lafayette, Ga.; four grandchildren;
and four grcat-gTandchildren.
The family was receiving visitors
at the Glenn Lively residence, 5201
Carriage Drive, Charlotte.

HESTER L. BABSON
Hester L. Babson, 66, of Ash,
died July 24 at her residence.
The funeral was July 26 at Coble
Ward Smiih Funeral Scrvicc Chapel,
with the Rev. Lloyd Ward officiat
ing. Burial was in Holy Light
Cemetery.
Mrs. Babson was born in Bladen
County on July 20, 1927, the daugh
ter of the late Lou and Kate
Andrews Smith. She was a member
of Emmanuel Outreach Church and
was employed for many years with
Pelican Manufacturing of Shallottc.
Survivors include her daughter,
Mrs. Jimmy (Stella) White of Ash;
two grandchildren, Jamie and Gary
White; a brother, Billy Smith of
Ash; two sisters. Hazel Ward of
Whitcvillc and Shclia Howard of
Shallottc; and a great-grandson.
HAROLD FRANKLIN CROUCH
Harold Franklin Crouch, 66, of
Bolivia died July 24 at Doshcr
Memorial Hospital, Southport.
A memorial service was held July
26 at Antioch Baptist Church, where
he was a member, with the Rev.
Arthur Yount officiating.
Mr. Crouch was born April 28,
1927, in Johnson City, Tenn., to the
late Smith and franccs Hill Crouch.
He moved to Brunswick County 12
years ago from Banner Elk. He was
employed in the planning and con
struction department at Bald Head
Island. He was a U.S. Navy veteran
of World War II.
Survivors includc his wife, Jean
Duggers Crouch of the home; a son,
Harold Franklin Crouch of South
port; a (laughter, Rebecca Cannon of
Harrisburg; and two grandchildren,
Preston and Amber Cannon.

Myrtle Lenoir Hcnning, 75, of
Wilmington, died July 25 in New
Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The funeral was July 28 in the
Coble-Ward Smith Chapel, Wilm
ington, with Gene Clifton officiat
ing.
Bom in Fayettcville on July 25,
1918, she was the daughter of the
late Albert G. and Lina Moore Lcc.
She was a member of the Long Leaf
Congregation of Jehovah's Witnes
ses.
Survivors includc her husband,
Robert C. Hcnning of the home;
four daughters, Nancy Milligan of
Wilmington, Glen Stroud of High
Point, Maready Hundley of Greens
boro and Jewell Fincy of Rcidsvillc;
two brothers, Fulton Lee of Lcland
and Earl Lcc of Wilmington; a sister,
Robcna Lowcry of Hope Mills; 19
grandchildren; 54 grcat-grandchil
drcn; and two great-great-grandchil
dren.
CHURCH ACTIVITIFS
Brunswick Islands Church To Hold Communion
Hoiy Communion will be offered
at the 10:55 a.m. service Aug. 1 at
Brunswick Islands Baptist Church.
The early service at 8:30 will con
tinue to be held until the church
moves to its new building, in addi
tion to the Resort Ministries service
at Holden Beach.
The church's Aug. 1 regular busi
ness meeting will include the nomi
nation of new deacons. Four will be
clccted, two to replace deacons
whose terms arc expiring, and two
new deacons because of growth in
church membership.
Work on the new church is con
tinuing with volunteer help. A cer
tificate of occupancy is expected
within two weeks. Volunteers arc
still needed to help with the final
sanding, painting and clean-up
chores.

will be the guest speaker at The
Holden Beach Chapel Sunday, Aug.
1.
The pastor of the week is a United
Methodist minister from High Point.
Holden Beach Chapel is located

with a nursery provided. Sunday
school begins at 10 a.m.

Buddhists To Celebrate
The Buddhist Association of
North Carolina will observe Asalaha
Pucha Day Sunday, Aug. 1, at the
monastery grounds on Midway
Road, Bolivia.
One of the mosl important festival
days of Buddhism, it marks the first
sermon presented by the Lord Bud
dha and the day his disciple was
completed.
The following day, Khao Phansa,
is when he prohibited monks from
all unneccsary traveling.
Sunday's celebration begins at
9:45 a.m. and continues into the af
ternoon. It will include ccrcmonial
chanting, food offerings to the
monks, dinner, a sermon on "The
Middle Path," meditation, and offer
ings of gifts to the monks following
Diabetes Classes
The fall session of diabetes edu
cation classes at The Brunswick
Hospital will begin Tuesday, Aug. 3,
from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the hospital
conference room.
The purpose of the six-week se
ries of classes is to educate diabetics
about proper nutrition, exercise, eye
care and foot care associated with
their disease. In addition it will fo
cus on the stress and complications
associated with diabetes.
Classes arc free and open to all
diabetics, as well as any family
members involved in their care.
Registered nurses from The Bruns
wick Hospital will be teaching the
classes.
Program participants will also be
invited to join the Diabetes Support
Group, which meets on the First

Bible School Parade
Roones Neck Baptist Church had a Vacation Bible School Parade on June 19. Children decorated a

Hunt Creates 'Coastal Futures'
Group, Proclaims 'Year Of Coast7
Gov. Jim Hunt has issued an cx
ccutivc order creating a 15-member
Coastal Futures Committee to
"study coastal issues and chart the
future of coastal management," ac
cording to a news release from the
N.C. Department of Environment,
Health and Natural Resources.
Hunt has also proclaimed 1994
"The Year of the Coast," in honor of
the 20th anniversary of the Coastal
Area Management Act (CAMA). In
September 1994, the governor has
promised to announce an action plan
and national conference on coastal
management.
"The effort will be a public-pri
vatc partnership to address impor
tant coastal issues," according to
DEHNR spokesman Jeanctte John
son. The General Assembly has ap
propriated S50.000 for the commit
tee. Leaders of environmental
groups also have committed to rais
ing private funds.
Richardson Preyer, former Con
gressman and former federal district
court judge from Greensboro, will
chair the committee. Other members
have not yet been appointed.
Milton Heath will be executive
secretary of the committee. Heath
was a leader in establishing North
Carolina's coastal management pro
gram and CAMA. He is a lawyer
and faculty member at the Institute
of Government in Chapel Hill.
