Ina M. King, Town Clerk Courtesy Is A State Of Mind BY BILL DEARMAN, EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT South Brunswick Islands Chamber of Commerce It is Monday morning. The alarm went off at 6 and, after pushing the snooze button for the third time, you roll out of bed at 6:30. Into the kitchen you walk, half awake, half asleep, trusting that you remembered to set the coffcc pot. When you turn the corner, there it is, steaming hot and wailing. You reach for a cup, get the milk out of the refrigerator, and reach for the sugar bowl. As you pour your first cup, the aroma fills the air with that wonderful fresh coffee smell. With the first sip, one eye opens. Another swal low and the other eye opens. A few minutes to look over the momir.g newspaper or catch the major news on the morning news show, and it is off to the show er. As that warm water flows over your face, you begin to feel even more awake. Out of the shower, a quick brush of the teeth, a shave, and you're ready for the world. Now, let's see, will I wear the blue shirt or the white one? O.K., it is the blue one today. Into the suit and tie and we are off to give the spouse a kiss, the dog a pal, and off to work we go. The sun is shining, the birds arc singing, and all is right with the world ? that is, until we get behind the wheel of the car. The car behind us is going too fast, the one in front, too slow. The line at the stop sign is too long. The car in front of you wants to make a left turn and will not pull out into the turning lane. By the time you ar rive at work, you arc five minutes late, and the boss gives you a hard look because the phone is ringing off the wall. You pick up the telephone and your first words are, "What do you want?" What a way to greet your first customer of the day! This person is the reason we all have jobs. We need them. They can lake their busi ness to someone else. The next time the morning rush gets the best of you? and your usual friendly disposition is left somewhere between the front door of your home and the front door of your place of work ? remember it only takes a moment to slop and recall where you left it. A kind word from a cheer ful voice will win you more friends and customers.
