Three 'Jane Does' Arrested
Three women known only as Jane Doc 1 , Jane Doc 2 and Jane Doc 3
remained in Brunswick County Jail Tuesday after being arrcstcci last
week at the Twilight Motel in Shallottc.
Shallottc Police Dct. Carey G ask ins charged the three women with
larceny in connection with the May 30 theft of approximately $416 in
merchandise from the Rite Aid drug store.
The white females arc being held in lieu of $5,000 bond each.
Gaskins added that they will not be released from jail until, they are iden
tified.
Gaskins said all three women arc from Gastonia and each is about 40
years old. Fingerprints have been sent to Gastonia for identification.
More charges are pending against the women.
Gaskins said police reccivcdaxall last Wednesday about two suspi
cious-looking women near th5 Sen Franklin store on Main Street.
The women had reportedly driven a vehicle in reverse along Main
Street before abandoning it. They were later found at the Twilight Motel
with another woman.
Gaskins said the three women appeared to be "drugged up" and
couldn't be identified. Police found approximately $2,000 worth of
cologne, perfume, over-thc-countcr drugs and prescription drugs in the
motel room.
Gaskins said no charged have been filed in connection with that mer
chandise bccausc authorities haven't determined if or where it was stolen.
"1 think they're going around different towns and doing this and
maybe returning to some towns," Gaskins said.
Shalknte Police Chief Rodney Gause said he planned to question the
women this week. He said Wrightsville Beach Police also are interested
in talking to the women.

coursc helps fulfill the basic educa
tional requirements for state certifi
cation as a law enforcement officer.
Program classes will meet Mon
days through Saturdays from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. through Nov. 22. After
completion of the comprehensive
course of 506 hours of study, an in
dividual should possess the general
attributes, knowledge and skills to
function as a "rookie" police officer.
The program includes extensive
training in firearms, emergency
medical services, defensive tactics,
physical fitness and other related
subjects. All courses arc taught by
instructors certified by the North
Carolina Justic Academy. Students
are prepared to take the exams
which must be passed before certifi
cation as a police office or deputy in
North Carolina: the Basic Training
Law Enforcement Officers exam
mandated by the North Carolina
Criminal Justice Education and
Training Standards Commission and
the Justice Officers Basic Training
exam mandated by the North Car
olina Sheriff's Education and Train
ing Standards Commission. In fact,
succcssful completion of the pro
gram requires that a student satisfy
the minimum requirements for certi
fication by the two commissions.
Graduates who pass the exams will
meet all requirements to seek em
ployment as police officers and sher
iff's deputies, as well as private sec
tor employment in the security field.
Arrest Made
In DOT Theft
A joint investigation by the
Brunswick County Sheriff's Depart
ment and the State Bureau of Inves
tigation resulted in the arrest Friday
of a man charged in the theft of a
truck and tools from a Department
of Transportation maintenance yard
in Belville last June.
Rudy Burnett Benton Jr., 25, of
Church Road, Lcland, has been
charged with felonious breaking and
entering and larceny, BCSD Detec
tive Ken Messer said Monday.
Investigators have recovered the
truck and some of the chain saws,
trimmers and other tools stolen in
the June 14 break-in, Messer said.
Benton is accused of prying open a
rear window and entering a brick
building in the DOT bridge mainte
nance yard. More than S20,0(X)
worth of items were reported stolen.
Messer said he anticipates "at
least one more arrest" in the case as
the joint investigation continues.
Benton has been freed on pay
ment of a S25.000 bond.

Trailer Break-In Nets Thieves

An estimated S8,270 worth of ap
pliances, jewelry and other house
hold items were stolen in a mobile
home break-in on Pea Landing Road
sometime in the past month, accord
ing to a crime report on file at the
Brunswick County Sheriff's De
partment Monday.
The homeowner told Deputy Joey
Adams that the trailer was secure
when he left for Maine on June 12.
He said he returned Friday to find
that someone had broken in and re
moved a considerable amount of his
property.
Among the stolen items listed on
the report were three necklaces val
ued at S2,4(X), a SI. 200 gold brac
elet, a gold ring, a freezer, a micro
wave oven, a stereo system, a color
television, a vacuum cleaner, an air
conditioner, two floor fans, a china
set, a "boom box," a telephone ans
wering machine and a woman's
leather coat.
An investigation into the case is
continuing.

was reported stolen after someone
broke the front door glass at Holdcn
Beach Video on N.C. 130 and pried
open a cash drawer Saturday night.
Deputy J.D. Gray estimated the
damage to the door at about $300.
?In the third theft reported at the
same business recenUy, a 1987 Nis
san pickup truck was stolen from
Lloyd's Oyster House at Shallottc
Point last week. Deputy Adams was
told that the truck had been left in a
fenced yard with the keys inside last
Monday evening. It was discovered
missing Friday afternoon. Adams
estimated its value at S5.000.
?A surfboard was among the S475
worth of items reported missing af
ter someone apparently kicked in the
front door of a trailer in Ocean
Lakes Mobile Home Park sometime
in the past few weeks. The owner
told Deputy Marshall Evans that he
returned to the trailer Friday and
found the front door ajar and the
jamb broken. The thief or thieves
apparently left through a sliding

6-foot, 4-inch "Bash" thnister with a
lemon-lime top and white bottom.
Two telephones also were removed
in the break-in.
?Someone caused an estimated
SI ,2(X) damage to a car owned by an
employee of Docker's Lounge on
N.C. 130 Friday night. She told De
puty Anthony Key that her 1992
Eagle Premier was parked outside the
bar when she discovered the damage
at about 8 am. Saturday. "A footprint
on the vehicle suggests that the vehi
cle had been kicked," Key reported.
?There was about $300 damage, but
nothing reported missing, in a mo
bile home break-in at Souihgatc
Estates that was discovered Friday.
The owner told Evans that a friend
had checked on the trailer and found
the front door kicked in, the back
door unlocked and several items
moved around.
?An 18-spccd mountain bike was
reported stolen from a mobile home
on Hale Swamp Road Tuesday. The
victim told Adams that she had left
the bicycic parked in the front yard
unlocked at about 10:30 p.m. Mon
day and found it missing the follow
ing afternoon. The bike was valued
at about 5205.
?Detective Ken Mcsscr took a re
port that SI, (XX) worth of jewelry
and a 9mm pistol was stolen from an
unlocked pickup truck parked in a
driveway on Village Road last Feb
ruary. The owner reported the theft
Tuesday (July 20).
?Someone poured dishwashing liq
uid into a fish pond and left toilet
paper strewn across the lawn of a
man who lives on Whitcvillc Road,
Ash, Friday night. The victim told
Adams that he went outside at about
7:30 a.m. Saturday and lound that
vandals "had taken toilet paper and
rolled his yard and had poured dish
washing liquid into his fish pon-i,
killing the fish." A floodlight and a
truck ornament valued at S23 also
were reported stolen. Adams esti
mated the damage at S430.
