STAFF PHOTO BY DOUG tUTTEK JEFF HUGGINS gets some tips on putting from John Lawrence , a member of The Gauntlet's golf staff Local Kids Get Hooked On Golf BY DOUG RUTTKR If you happen lo be watching a professional golf tournament on television in the year 2005 and see the name Trey Grant on the leader board, remember where he got his start. Trey, a 13-year-old Southport boy, was one of 20 local youngsters who received their first true taste of golf last week at the third annual "Hook A Kid On Golf" program. Hosted by The Gauntlet at St. James Plantation, the week-long clinic is intended for boys and girls ages 8 to 14 who have never played the sport. The golf course staff teaches kids the fundamentals. "I used to have some old clubs 1 hit in my back yard, but I didn't know how to play," Trey said last Thursday while Gauntlet pros Tom Plankers and John Lawrence taught putting. "This is my first time learning," Trey added. "I learned how to hit it a long ways without killing the ball and how to putt better." The Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department coordinates the program and Si 00 contributions are sought from area businesses to sponsor each participant Each child in the program re ceives a shirt, three clubs, bag, visor, balls, accessories, membership card and five half-days of instruction on the fundamentals of driving, chip ping and putting. But there's more to golf than sim ply hitting the ball. As every golfer knows, there are plenty of rules and customs to be learned. They're in cluded in the instruction provided by the golf course staff. "Also we learned golf etiquette," Trey added. "You have to be quiet on the golf course and not move around when somebody else is hit ting and not cross the path of their ball when somebody else is putting." Jeff Huggins, a tiny 10-year-old, said he likes hitting the ball a long way. "I like the driving range. This is my first time at golf camp. I like it out here." Another beginner, Troy Simmons, also prefers driving to the other as pects of golf. "It's good because we TEACHER'S SUMMER SPECIAL ?Rounds -tRoughs + Relaxation (the three "Rs" of summer) Have we got a FIELD TRIP for you! The Gauntlet would like to extend to all teachers a fun filled day of golf (Prica includes cart and green fee) Valid throughout tha month of August Please preeent proof of educational profeaaion at Pro Shop Call for Tee Times 1-800-247-4806 Hwy. 211, Southport, NC 28461 PROPER DRESS REQUIRED Golf & Country Club $20 get to hit the ball and putt a lot," he said of the program. Hook A Kid On Golf is designed to introduce the sport to kids with the hope they will continue playing long after the week-long clinic is completed. Huggins promised to keep swing ing until he gets better. "I'm not re ally good at golf yet," he said. Joe Rosselli, county athletic coor dinator, said this is the second year the program has been held at The Gauntlet. "This course is just so strong in youth golf. That's why we brought it back here for a second year." Rosselli said the United States Golf Association has rated Hook A Kid On Golf as one of the best youth programs in the country. He said the average student-teacher ratio of 8-1 helps make the program what it is. Hook A Kid On Golf first came to Brunswick County in 1991 when it was hosted by Sea Trail Plantation. The county was one of only 25 sites in the nation to offer the clinic that year. Although the program has seen tremendous expansion since then, Brunswick County remains a pio neer. The Gauntlet will host a skills competition Friday morning for the 70 local children who have complet ed the program. Rosselli said Brunswick is one of only four sites in the country that is offering the pilot program. Kids will compete in short putting, long putting, chipping and driving. "It's basically a competition but real low key." Carolina Shores To Host Scramble Carolina Shores Golf & Country Club of Calabash will host a scram ble golf tournament Wednesday, Aug. 11, at 11:30 a.m. The $23 entry fee covers the cost of green and cart fees, beverages during and after play and prizes.
