Calabash Lady Auxiliarists Raising Funds Flood relief, summer camp for lo cal boys, fire and rescue squad sup port, holiday baskets for the needy. These are just a few of the projects supported by the Ladies Auxiliary of Calabash Elks Lodge No. 2679. Local residents who want to sup port those efforts have a number of ways to do so. Copies of the auxiliary's cook book, "Mrs. Calabash's Kitchen," are still for sale locally, and two events arc scheduled in the near future. On Aug. 21, the auxiliary will hold its first ladies only golf tourna ment at Sea Trail Plantation, which promises to be a yearly event, with proceeds to go toward establishing a nursing scholarship at Brunswick Community College. Linda Walters (579-6238) and Pali Lcwcllyn (579 3463) are taking reservations. On Sept. 25 the lodge and auxil iary hold their annual "His & Hers Festival" ai the lodge on Carter Drive in Calabash. LIVINGSTON FURNITURE GALLERIES 7 m Toastmaster Of The Year Franccs Warner of Holdcn Bcach has been named the 1992-93 Toast master of the Year by the Coast Toasters Club of Shallottc. The award, presented at the club's Aug. 5 meeting, recogni/.cs War ner's accomplishments in meeting her own educational goals and help ing the club reach its goals. She joined the Coast Toasters Club 2'A years ago, confronting a lifelong fear of public speaking. While Warner says she still becomes nervous before giving a speech, she now channels that nervous energy to enhance her delivery. She credits Toastmasters with providing the op portunity to develop and polish her skills. "I love Toasunasters and I tell people about it wherever 1 go," she said. This past year she sponsored four new members, completed the club's basic communications program, served as club secretary, used her communication skills in giving spccchcs and programs outside the club. She was voted No. 1 by fellow members in enthusiasm, helping others and dedication. Coast Toasters is the local affiliate of Toastmastcrs International, a not for-profit educational organization whose members help each other to improve their leadership and com munications skills. The club holds seminar-type meetings each Thurs day from 7 a.m. to X a.m. at the South Brunswick Islands Chamber of Commerce building. Main Street, Shallottc. Guests arc always wel come. Home Day Care Training Set Local residents interested in be coming licensed to keep children in their home can sign up for a home based day care training class offered through Brunswick Comm. College. For students who meet income guidelines, the JTPA (Job Training Partnership Act) program will pro vide tuition, books and supplies. For others a S35 fee will be charged. The home-based day carc classcs begin Wednesday, Sept. 8, and will mccl from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tues days, Thursdays and Fridays. Golden Anniversary Rachel M. and J. Clyde Gore of Sunset Reach will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 15. Their children will honor them with a reception at Seaside United Methodist Church; invita tions have been sent. The Gores have three children, six grandchil dren and a great-granddaughter. Brunswick County Health Department Works To Encourage WIC Participation The N.C. Supplemental Food Pro gram for Women, Infants and Chil dren (WIC) is working to make this program accessible to eligible wo men, infants and children, including migrants and homeless people. The WIC program provides sup plemental foods and nutrition educa tion to participants. In order to be eligible, applicants must: ?be pregnant, breastfeeding or post partum women, infants or children* up to their fifth birthday; ?reside in North Carolina and the health service delivery area of Brunswick County; ?meet the financial eligibility guidelines of the Brunswick County Health Department; ?be found to be at nutritional risk. The Brunswick County WIC pro gram is particularly interested in the participation of pregnant or breast feeding women and infants, accord ing to coordinator Janet Shew. If you think you arc eligible for the WIC program, contact the Brunswick County Health Depart ment at 25 Courthouse Drive N.E., Bolivia NC 28422, or call 253-4381 in the Bolivia area, 457-5281 in the Southport area, or 763-1312 in the Leland area.
