Retires From Position JoAnnc Frazicr has retired as Cape Fear Chapter manager of the American Red Cross after 32 years of service in the Carolinas. Fra/ier retired June 30 alter three years as manager of the local chap ter, which serves Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties. She has been replaced by Toni H. Rupert, a West Virginia native who has served as a Red Cross executive for 12 years. Rupert will be moving to Wilmington from Rochester, N.Y 1 8 Turtle Nests Up For Adoption Eighteen sea turtle nests at Hol den Beach are still available for adoption, says Judy Bryan, coordi nator of the town's Tunic Watch program. The eggs arc expected to hatch in September and October. As the hatching time ncars for a particular nest, program volun teers ? usually working in teams ? stand watch so they can help the emerging baby turtles on their haz ardous trek to the ocean. Any individual, family or group interested in adopting a nest is asked to call Bryan immediately at 842 7242. Red Cross Seeking Donors The American Red Cross is ap pealing to local residents to partici pate in upcoming blood drives. The next local drive will be held Monday, Aug. 23, from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport. Blood is a perishable product that only lasts 42 days on the shelf. Accidents, planned surgeries and blood therapy arc just some of the ways blood is used. All blood types arc needed now. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh more than 110 pounds and be in good general health. According to Dr. Jerry Squires, it is important for collection goals to be met at upcoming drives to insure that adequate blood supplies arc available to meet transfusion needs in area hosptials. A combination of low turnout of volunteers, with no accompanying decline in the need for blood prod ucts, stretches resources during the summer months, he indicated. Blood donations can be made very two months, or 56 days. So far this summer collections have only reached about 79.5 per cent of hospital demands. Between now and Sept. 12, the Red Cross says it needs 1 ,350 people to donate each day to meet the needs of pa tients in 119 hospitals in the Carolinas Region. The region serves 80 counties in North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. For more information on donating or on the bloodmobilc, contact the Cape Fear Chapter office at 919 762-2683.
