PRE-SEASON FOOTBALL South Brunswick Bests Hoggard In 'Quagmire' BY DOLJC; RUTTER South Brunswick kepi a light grip on the rain-slick pigskin Saturday while Hoggard coughcd up seven fumbles in a pre-season high school football scrimmage in Boiling Spring Lakes. As a result, South's Cougars scored three touchdowns and yield ed just one in their first contest of the year. The Cougars get their final pre-season tuncup Friday night at the UCB Football Jamboree in Wilmington. "It was like a quagmire out there," South Brunswick Head Coach Bill Hewett said following Saturday's scrimmage with the 4A Vikings. "1 was impressed with the way our boys held the ball," Hewett added. "We probably moved the ball better than 1 thought we would." South Brunswick moved the ball almost exclusively on the ground behind the running of O.J. Morris, Terry Galloway and Kevin Smith. The Cougars completed just one pass, but it helped set up the final touchdown. "We didn't throw the ball tonight but we can throw it,'* said Hcwctl, who will use a triple-option offense this season. "People aren't going to be able to load up on us like last year." Hcwctt said he has added a "few wrinkles" to the wishbone attack the Cougars used in 1992. "We're going to make people play us honest," he said, alluding to an improved pass ing game. The coach said he was impressed with his defense, which has a lot of players back from last season. "We've got 11 hitters out there. We've got decent speed, decent size. Defense is going to carry us." The Cougars recovered seven fumbles Saturday as Hoggard's run ning backs had trouble handling the slippery ball. South lost one fumble. Hoggard scored its lone touch down in die first half. In the second half, the Cougars engineered three nice drives that ultimately led to scores. South had two 1 1 -play drives and one 15-play drive in the second half. Playing conditions Saturday night were far from ideal as it rained most of the game. Earlier in the day, rain forced West Brunswick to cancci its scrimmage with North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Trojan Coach Jim Brett and his assistants, anticipating a Nov. 5 showdown at South Brunswick, scouted the Cougars Saturday. Many of West Brunswick's players also at tended the scrimmage. "1 think there was more green out here tonight than blue," Hcwctt said, referring to the colors of the rival schools. The Cougars will take on the New Hanover Wildcats Friday in the sev enth annual UCB Jamboree at Leg ion Stadium. The six-team scrim mage starts at 7 p.m., and South Brunswick will take the field first. Hoggard will play Whitcvillc and Lancy will play Wallace-Rose Hill later in the evening. A chccrlcading competition among the six partici pating schools will begin at 6 p.m. Jamboree tickets will cost S4 at the gate or S3 in advance at United Carolina Bank branches in South port, Wilmington and Whitcvillc. TROJANS HIT THE ROAD West Brunswick Gridders Face Back-To-Back Scrimmages North Brunswick Football Coach Gary Baldwin said he saw some good things and some not-so-good things Saturday night when his Scorpions battled host East Colum bus in a pre season high school scrimmage. "It didn't go bad," Baldwin said Monday. "I saw some things that 1 liked and 1 saw some things where we need improvement." The head coach said the Scorpion defense looked pretty solid, despite the absence of four to six potential starters who missed the scrimmage because of summer family vacations. North Brunswick gave up two touchdowns, Baldwin said, on a re verse and a pass play. "The bright spot was we had a lot of guys com ing up to make good contact," he said. "Offensively wc didn't look very sharp," Baldwin said. "It was rain ing and the ball was wet and wc couldn't throw it, plus wc have some new guys on the line who arc slill learning the position." "Not being able to throw the ball hurt us bccausc we do plan to throw it," he added. "That limited what we could do." North Brunswick is scheduled to scrimmage at Union High School Thursday at 6 p.m. "We're going to do pretty much the same thing we did Saturday," Baldwin said. "1 hope some of those guys on vacation will be back this week and I hope it's dry." North Brunswick opens the regu lar season Aug. 27 at Topsail. BY DOUG R UTTER The West Brunswick football team will probably be a tired and aching bunch come Friday morning. The Trojans, who didn't get to play their scheduled scrimmage against North Myrtle Beach, S.C., had back to-back road trips planned Wednesday and Thursday night. West Brunswick was scheduled to scrimmage at Mullins, S.C., Wednesday at 6 p.m. and East Duplin Thursday at 7 p.m. Both schools arc about a two-hour bus ride away. "North Myrtle Beach canceling on us really put us in a bind," Trojan Coach Jim Brett said Tuesday. "But we feel one scrimmage isn't enough when Conway is going to play five scrimmages." West Brunswick will open the regular season next Friday night at home against the Conway (S.C.) Tigers. Before then, the Trojans had some serious traveling to do this week. West's scrimmage with North Myrtle Beach was rained out Saturday morning. The game was re-sched uled for Monday night in Shallotic, but the Chiefs called Sunday to cancel. "Their coach told me that their JV coach could not come to practice on Monday and that they would have to slay there with the junior varsity," Brett said. "It sounds to me like they didn't want to come and scrim mage." Since North Carolina high schools arc limited to two prc-season games and most teams already have their scrimmages slated, Brett had to scramble to come up with a replacement for the Chiefs. The coach said he called around until midnight Sunday to line up the contcst at Mullins, where the Trojans were expected to play in a three-way scrimmage with the host Auctioneers and Lake City, S.C. "1 feel fortunate that we got into that scrimmage at Mullins," Brett said. "They really bailed us out." Brett said playing the two scrimmage games arc an important part of the prc-scason and vital to evaluating the team. "We just want to see where we're at and play some other people," he said. "You have no idea scrimmaging yourself where you're at. We just hope to find out what we need to work on for Conway." At this point in the summer, Brett said he thinks the Trojans arc better than they were last year. "I feel like we're ahead of last year, but exactly how far ahead I'm not sure," he said. "That's what the scrim mages arc for, to see where we stand." / Advance*"* Customer Auto partsm Service! mm M / / / / ' Rerna pufxtured Rack Ana Pinion i As Low As power Torque New , Clutch Kits As Low to _ 79 Each Kit W/Exch.
