Willard Leon Squires, 79, of
Britthaven of Wrightsville Beach
died Aug. 17 in Cape Fear Memorial
Hospital, Wilmington.
The funeral was Aug. 20 in Nat
more Baptist Church in Kelly, with
burial in the church cemetery.
Mr. Squires was born in Colum
bus County on Aug. 17, 1914, the
son of the late Walter Lee and Fran
ces Viola Squires.
Survivors include his wife, Mary
Lee Squires; one sons, Richard Eu
gene Squires of Leiand; five daugh
ters, Frances Annette Squires of Eau
Claire, Wis., Nancy Louise Webster
of Havelock, Mary Jo Eason of
Castle Hayne, and Barbara Jean Yott
and Shirley Ann Squires, both of
Wilmington; a brother, Alonza
Squires of Selma; 22 grandchildren;
and 18 great-grandchildren.
ESTHER M. WORRELL
Esther M. WorTell, 90, of Route 5,
Whiteville, died Aug. 16 in Colum
bus County Hospital.
The funeral was Aug. 19 in
Spring Branch Pentecostal Fire Bap
tized Holiness Church by the Rev.
Larry Small, the Rev. Jerry Powell
and the Rev. Steve Johnson. Burial
was in New Hope Baptist Church
Cemetery.
Mrs. Worrell's survivors include
three sons. J.G. Worrell of Shallotte,
Curtis Worrell of Issaquah, Wash.,
and Jerry Worrell of Whiteville;
three daughters, Brenda Gray of
Norfolk, Va., and Iris Dutton and
Betty Long, both of Longwood; a
sister. Miriam Butler of Clarendon;
a brother, the Rev. Joe Sellers of
Whiteville; 25 grandchildren; and 24
great-grandchildren.

Aug. 14 at her home.

BERNARD LEAKE JONES JR.
Bernard Leake Jones Jr., 78, of
Sunset Beach died Aug. 18 at his
home. He was a retired insurance
agent.
The funeral was Aug. 20 at the
graveside in Brunswick Memorial
Gardens, Shallotte.
Mr. Jones was born in Richmond,
Va., on Dec. 14, 1914, the son of the
late Myrtle Russell and Bernard
Leake Jones Sr. He was a U.S.
Army veteran of World War II. For
50 years he was a member of Fitz
gerald Lodge No. 299, A.F. & A.M.
of Richmond, Va.
Survivors include a niece, Kay
Lambert of Shallotte.

George Bryant of Bolivia died
Aug. 20 at his residence.
The funeral was held Aug. 24 at
Piney Grove Freewill Baptist
Church. Burial was in St. Mary's
Cemetery.
ELLA LEE CLEMMONS
Ella Lee Clemmons, 85, of Sup
ply, died Aug. 19 in The Brunswick
Hospital.
The funeral was Aug. 21 in Mt.
Pisgah Baptist Church, Supply, with
burial in Georgetown/Holden Cem
etery.
She was born in Brunswick
County on July 18, 1908, a daughter
of the late Arie and Maude Holden
Brown.
Survivors include three daughters,
Darnell Brown of Supply, Dallas
Tatum of Wilmington and Jackie
Shelley of Supply; a sister, Elneda
Brown Bowen of Supply; nine
grandchildren; and eight great
grandchildren.
FREDERICK HERMAN KART
JR.
Frederick Herman Kart Jr., 40, of
Shady Rest Place, Shallotte, died
Aug. 22 in New Hanover Regional
Medical Center.
The funeral was Aug. 25 in the
Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel,
with the Rev. Maurice Milligan offi
ciating. Burial was in Brunswick
Memorial Gardens, Shallotte.
Mr. Kart was born in Riverhead.
N.Y., on Sept. 9. 1952, the son of
Frederick H. and Joyce Verity Kart
of Shallotte. He owned and operated
Eastern Tree Service.
Survivors, in addition to his par
ents, include his wife, Kathleen
Smith Kart of the home; two sons,
Michael and Joshua Kart of the
home; three daughters. Crystal Kart
of the home, Laura K. Williams of
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Catherine
K. Hill of Anchorage, Alaska; two
sisters, Susan K Beck and Ellen K.
Bulak, both of Shallotte; and two
grandchildren.

Gracie Tripp, 72, of Ash, died
Aug. 20 in The Brunswick Hospital
at Supply.
The funeral was Aug. 23 in
Friendship Baptist Church, conduct
ed by the Rev. James Whitworth and
the Rev. Charles Hilburn. Burial was
in Smith Cemetery at Ash.
Mrs. Tripp was the daughter of
the late Frederick and Ala Raila
Hines.
Survivors include her husband,
Ozzie Tripp of the home; two sons,
James R. Tripp and Bill Tripp, both
of Ash; five daughters, Fay Sim
mons, Betty Gore, Pat Long, Brenda
Cribb and Annie McKeithan, all of
Ash; three brothers, Ed Hines of
Whiteville, Harry Hines of Ash and
Bennie Hines Jones of Savannah,
Ga.; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great
grandchildren.

Charles Eugene Abernethy, 60, of
Supply, died Aug. 20 in The Bruns
wick Hospital.

Memorial Gardens.
Abemethy was born in Rowland
County on Dec. 9, 1932, a son of
Vera Belk Abernethy of China
Grove and the late Avery Lee Aber
nethy. He was a U.S. Navy veteiaii
and a member of Shallotte Moose
Lodge No. 710.

School Day
Offered
An Extended School Day pro
gram will be offered again this year
at West Brunswick High School
starting next week.
The program is provided by
Brunswick County Schools to give
students an alternative to dropping
out of school.
General curriculum classes that
are required for a high school diplo
ma are provided, along with individ
ualized instruction and flexible
schedules to accommodate working
students, said Brenda Council.
Anyone who is age 16 or older
may consider this alternative way to
earn high school credit.
Classes resume Monday. Aug. 30
from 3:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at the
high school on N.C. 130 West.
However, students may enroll at any
time. More information is available
by coming by the school or calling
Council at 754-5642.
