At the 10th annual ceremony, two nursing awards were given to excep tional students who not only attained outstanding academic achievement, but also demonstrated responsible leadership, high standards of profes sional behavior, and service to Brunswick Community College and their community. BCC Dean of Student Services Beth L. McLean presented Practical Nursing graduate Tijuania Bigley Hansen with the Esther Swain Fraser Nursing Award. The $3(X) cash award and plague are given an nually in memory of the late Southport resident, Esther Swain Fraser, by her sisters, Margaret Hood and Marie S. Harris. Stella Babson, R.N., director of nursing at Autumn Care of Shallotte was the guest speaker for the cere Brunswick Residents Needed As Abuse Prevention Advocates Brunswick County volunteers are being sought to serve as child abuse prevention advocates by the N.C. Chapter of the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse. Advocates represent the chapter and the committee and provide in formation to their community on child abuse and prevention efforts. They serve as the community's link with the organization's statewide child abuse prevention network. Volunteers are asked to commit six to 10 hours per month for one year. rjJ Reports of child abuse and ne glect have increased 91.2 percent since 1989, according to the N.C. Department of Human Resources. "As these numbers continue to rise, so does our need to ensure that everyone in North Carolina has ac cess to information on how to pre vent the abuse and neglect of our children," chapter spokesman Elizabeth Odham said. The chapter, founded in 1979, is a nonprofit, volunteer-based statewide organization. Milli ken, R.N., and BCC President W. Michael Reaves opened the pinning ceremony with welcome addresses. The Rev. Wayne Trcxler, pastor of Southport Baptist Church, gave the invocation. Ms. Amanda Prevatte, organist, provided music for the pro cessional, candle lighting and reces sional. Robert D. Floyd, soloist, of Holden Beach sang "The River" and "The Lord's Prayer," accompanied by Beverly Ann Fitzgerald, pianist. Special music dedicated to the families and friends of the graduates was provided by Lily Katherine Galloway, Deborah Elizabeth Ross Lanier and Beverly Ann Fitzgerald. The 1993 class message was pre sented by April Robinson Perry and Rachel Lynn Smith. Beverly Ann Fitzgerald and Jennifer Suzanne Lennon made the class presentation. Each of the graduating nurses re ceived a nursing pin and a rose from their instructors. Janice G. Floyd, R.N., Bernice A. Lewis. R.N., Tanya O. Mace, R.N.. and Milliken. Dur ing the candle-lighting segment of the ceremony, each graduate re ceived a small Florence Nightingale lamp, as a gift from the nursing fac ulty. Each lit their lamp (symboliz ing knowledge and skills attained in the nursing program) from a larger lamp in the center. A reception at the Southport Community Building followed the pinning ceremony for the graduates and their guests, courtesy of the Brunswick Community College Foundation, J. A. GED tests (any lest except writing skills) will he given at Brunswick Community College's main campus, U.S. 17 Business, Supply, on Tuesday. Sepl. 14, at 5 p.m. and on Tuesday. Sept. 21, at 1 p.m. Any GED test will be given al BCC's Soulhport campus, on North Lord Street, on Thursday, September 9, al 5 p.m.. and at Brunswick Com munity College's Lcland campus. Leland Industrial Park, (U.S. 74-76. on Wednesday. Sept. 15. at 1 1 a.m. The writing skills GED test only will be administered on Tuesday, Sept. 7, on BCC's main campus at Supply at 1 p.m. Any of the GED tests, except for the writing skills test, will also be given at BCC's Iceland campus on Wednesday. Sign Up Next Wednesday For Fall Classes At BCC Fall quarter registration at Bruns wick Community College will he held Wednesday. Sept. 1, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the main campus north of Supply on U .S. 17 Business. Classes for the fall quarter will begin Tuesday, Sept. 7, after the Labor Day holiday, said college spokesman Anne Marie Bellamy. I .ate registration and drop/add will be held Tuesday, Sept. 7, through Thursday. Sept. 9. Hours for late registration are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. all three days. As of Aug. 18 more than 300 con tinuing students had pre-registered for the fall quarter, according to Dean of Students Beth McLean.
