FISHING REPORT
Anglers Seeing Early Signs
Of Fall With Spot Catches
BY DOUG R UTTER
Local fishermen arc starting to
see early signs of fall.
"I think the spots arc here," said
John Sheffield of Sheffield's store at
Ocean Isle Beach. "i;ishing has been
pretty good."
Sheffield said a reliable source
told hint about some large spots
caught in a net last week in one of
Ocean Isle's concrete canals.
Dale Hewctt. an N.C. Division of
Marine Fisheries enforcement offi
cer, told Sheffield he saw spots mea
suring 1 1 'A inches long.
"That was no hearsay," Sheffield
reported Monday morning. "A Ma
rine Fisheries officer seen it him
self."
Sheffield said anglers also caught
gray trout, flounder and drum last
week, as well as king mackerel off
shore.
"It's l>een pretty good fishing now
that the people are leaving," Shef
field said. "It's looking like it'll be a
good fall right now. That cooler
weather is getting everybody in the
spirit."
IVipp's Fishing Center
Joyce Land of Tripp's Fishing
Center at Shallotte Point also report
ed an increase in large spots last
week.
Anglers are catching lots of yel
low-belly spots in gill nets and a few

earlier than usual," Land said
Monday morning. "It's looking up
right now."
She said fishermen also caught
large flounder, speckled trout, black
drum and spottailcd drum last week.
Offshore, I .and said fishermen
pulled in king and Spanish macker
el. "Spanish fishing is picking up,"
she said.

Anglers caught spots and whiting
last week at Holdcn Beach Fishing
Pier, where fishing has been best at
night.
"There's been a handful of trout
and flounder," said spokesman For
rest Whitley. "For the time of year it
hasn't been bad. It's August so it's
slow."
Ed Kayler of Sunset Beach Fish
ing Pier said fishermen caught pom
pano. whiting, trout and a few spots
last week.
"The weekend was kind of slow,"
Kayler said.
Anglers didn't have much luck
last week at Ocean Isle Beach Fish
ing Pier, according to manager Cur
tis Williamson.
"Ain't a whole lot of fishing go
ing on," he said Monday. "They
caught a few spots on the weekend."
Williamson said the 82-degree
ocean water temperature needs to
cool down before fishing will im
prove.
"That water temperature is still
hot. 1 think that's the biggest prob
lem," he said. "As soon as that cools
down I think the fish will start bit
ing."
