FISHING REPORT Anglers Seeing Early Signs Of Fall With Spot Catches BY DOUG R UTTER Local fishermen arc starting to see early signs of fall. "I think the spots arc here," said John Sheffield of Sheffield's store at Ocean Isle Beach. "i;ishing has been pretty good." Sheffield said a reliable source told hint about some large spots caught in a net last week in one of Ocean Isle's concrete canals. Dale Hewctt. an N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries enforcement offi cer, told Sheffield he saw spots mea suring 1 1 'A inches long. "That was no hearsay," Sheffield reported Monday morning. "A Ma rine Fisheries officer seen it him self." Sheffield said anglers also caught gray trout, flounder and drum last week, as well as king mackerel off shore. "It's l>een pretty good fishing now that the people are leaving," Shef field said. "It's looking like it'll be a good fall right now. That cooler weather is getting everybody in the spirit." IVipp's Fishing Center Joyce Land of Tripp's Fishing Center at Shallotte Point also report ed an increase in large spots last week. There is no charge for the course, but a nominal charge is made for materials. The course will teach boat han dling, elementary seasmanship, reg istration, equipment regulations, safe operation, charts and aids to naviga tion, basic navigation, trailer boating and more. The Shallotte River Power Squad ron will offer its boating course be ginning Sept. 21 for those who want to learn to skipper a boat with confi dence. Classes will be held for eight con secutive Tuesdays at 7 P.M. at the Atlantic Telephone Membership Corporation office, Hwy. 130 west r Anglers caught spots and whiting last week at Holdcn Beach Fishing Pier, where fishing has been best at night. "There's been a handful of trout and flounder," said spokesman For rest Whitley. "For the time of year it hasn't been bad. It's August so it's slow." Anglers didn't have much luck last week at Ocean Isle Beach Fish ing Pier, according to manager Cur tis Williamson. "Ain't a whole lot of fishing go ing on," he said Monday. "They caught a few spots on the weekend." Williamson said the 82-degree ocean water temperature needs to cool down before fishing will im prove. "That water temperature is still hot. 1 think that's the biggest prob lem," he said. "As soon as that cools down I think the fish will start bit ing."
